The lack of working CCS for macOS Big Sur is appalling

Company security policy mandated "upgrade" to Big Sur and because of that  for four months now I do not have a working CCS studio for Big Sur.

I have to do my coding on the sly on an old partition where nothing else works. What a joke but I'm not laughing.

With macOS Monterey just round the corner this is appalling and not impressive support from IT.

And my Eclipse working just fine on Big Sur.

Just venting my frustration here.

cheers Kusti

  • Hi!

I don't know whether you're forced to use mac & macos, but if you need the job done, why don't you get a windows machine?

  • That would be forcing me to use Windows! ;) Sure, I have more laptops with Windows and Linux on my disposal than what I care for but I'm most comfortable doing my thing on Mac so it really pains me to use a Windows laptop. All my reactions that come from the spine and muscle memory are just wrong when I switch to slightly different keyboard layout, the touchpad on other laptops are inferior (I never use a mouse), the screens are not as nice as the retina display I have, not to mention all the OS stuff I'm used to (having Unix under the hood that just works and stays the same is very nice). Embedded development is not my only work so I use a lot open source tools and stuff and on Windows it is super inconvenient. It is not perfect on macOS either but much better.

So yes, I get my job done one way or the other.

But it is appalling that TI takes so long to fix this issue which they created in the first place by rebranding Eclipse as Code Composes Studio. Why did they not create a set of plugins for vanilla Eclipse, everybody, except TI marketing, would have been much happier.

  • Well, sorry, I missed the point.

You know, in DSP world we keep old Pentium4 machines with Windows XP to get job done with legacy devices, we keep box licenses of Windows XP for virtual machines again for same reason, we never mind Code Composer tastes better when installed in c:\ti, we don't mind make sure our user name in the system has neither spaces, nor non-Latin characters and more, more, more. Just every time I remember a joke about 'beta' software, which is 'beta than nothin'.

  • Kusti,

The BigSur situation right now is definitely a mess.  We try to add support for the latest macOS in the first CCS release after its availability.  Unfortunately, BigSur requires an upgrade to Eclipse and we only change our Eclipse version in major CCS releases.  That pushed the BigSur fixes to CCSv11.0.0.  We used to actually provide our content so that it could be installed into an existing installation.  However, there was almost zero usage of that option.  It is appealing to people who like to roll their own product but it just did not catch on with our customers.

It is quite possible that we will change our model on when we can update Eclipse.  Currently we only do it in major CCS releases as there can be workspace and other compatibility issues that we must avoid in incremental releases.  However Eclipse changed their release model a while back and now each Eclipse release is smaller with minor changes.

If you are interested I can provide you with an early build of CCSv11.0.

    Regards,

    John

  • Kusti,

We will have a beta build of CCSv11 next week if you want something that works much better on bigSur.  I tried out an early build this week on my M1 MacBook Air this week which is running BigSur and it was working much better for me.  If you are interested let me know.

    Regards,

    John

  • HI John,

I assumed my replies to the email notification would go to this thread. Apparently not.

So yes, please I would love to have a go at a beta build. Much appreciated.

  • Kusti,

Here is a link to the early beta build.  The splash screen and default workspace still say v10 but this is the v11 beta.
