CCSv10 (under windows) cannot restart after latest update

After responding to a notification that a new update was available, the update was applied and CCSv10 attempted to restart, but the result was the display of two dialogs: (1) a dialog entitled "Setup" with an empty progress bar and NO text, and (2) a dialog entitled "Error" with the text:

There has been an error.
Error processing regular expression /(nickname|name)=***unknown variable updatename***

and an "OK" button.

There is no indication as to what file is being processed when the error occurs.

There appears to be no way to use CCSv10 at this point.

Hello,

I've never seen that error before. Was a CCS 10.4.0 incremental update? If so, what version did you upgrade from?

I assume you get the same error with repeated attempts to launch CCS?

Yes, to the question about getting the same error if I try to start CCSv10 on my own.

As to the nature of the update, all I can recall is that there was only one item in the list. I believe it was an update to the compiler tools for MSP430 as opposed to the CCSv10 environment. The only thing I recall is there was an "8" in the version number, but I cannot recall the full number. Since I cannot now start up CCS, there is no way for me to query any of the versions. Alas, this means I cannot tell you what version I was updating from, or to. On the other hand, what I can say is that I installed the new CCSv10 in place of CCSv6 earlier this month, and the last update I did prior to today was just a couple weeks ago (08/16/21), so one supposes I'd be running a fairly current version of CCSv10 and the MSP430 toolset.

In the event, if I look in the C:\TI directory tree, I see a folder called "ccs1011". In that, there is a "ccs" folder and a "xdctools_3_61_02_27_core" directory. Oddly enough, in the "ccs" folder there is a folder called "install_info" that contains two folders: one called "10.1.1.00004" with today's date and another called "10.2.0.00009" with a date of August 9, 2021 (which sounds like it could have been the last time I did an update). From the names of the folders, however, they seem "backwards" -- like a 10.2.0 version build was "updated" to a 10.1.1 build (though I can't say for sure since I don't know how TI names these things. In fact, I just checked the files (v. folders) in that same directory, and the only files that match the date (today's) of the 10.1.1.00004 folder I mentioned have the string "msp432" in them, which suggests that today's update was only for the MSP432 family tools rather than the MSP430 tools. The two files in question are "com.ti.msp432.build_debug.properties" and "com.ti.msp432.support_files.properties". Both of these seem trivial in the sense that they contain a "Featureid" setting (that matches the file name) and a "Version" (8.2.4 for the "build_debug" file and 8.2.3 for the "support_files" file), but the remaining entries are blank; that is:

Tag=

Meanwhile, there is an "install_logs" folder parallel to the "install_info" folder, and it contains a number of sub-folders. Somewhat surprisingly, there are FIVE such folders with today's date. Each of these has a name that matches the timestamp (e.g., "20210826104159", ..., "20210826111708"). ALL FIVE of these folders contain just one file with the same exact name: "ccs_update_10.4.0.00006.log". I'm going to guess these represent the number of times I've tried to re-start CCS to install the update. Since the error occurred on the very first try, one supposes the content of the earliest file may be salient; this is:

Nothing in any of this seems obviously problematic, so I'm not sure it's useful at all, but if there is anything else you may need to see to help diagnose the failure, I can try to supply it. I really need to get back to working order, as this really could not have happened at a more critical time.

It looks like an incremental update attempt to CCS 10.4.0. I will need to pull in our installer/update expert so see what happened.

Given that this is a critical time, you are likely better off just doing a full CCS 10.4.0 installation from the the official 10.4.0 installer:
