Code Composer Update Manager hangs

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320C5515, CCSTUDIO

Hello,

I just installed  Code Composer Studio 4.1.3.00034  for/from TMS320C5515 eZdsp USB Stick 23 Nov 2010. I'm using Windows 7. When I run Help/Software Updates, Update Manager hangs on its first task, continually displaying  "Checking Code Generation Tool Updates..." Sometimes it gets to 32% of completion, sometimes not that far. I have to kill Code Composer from the Windows Task Manager in order to restart it.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Eric

  • Eric,

Did you happen to install in program files?  If so that is likely the cause.  Win7 really doesn't like programs writing to the program files folder during runtime.  The update manager has to write to the installation folder so if CCS is installed under Program Files this can be an issue on Win7.  Newer CCS installers detect if you are using Win7 and suggest a different location.

    Regards,

    John

  • Hi John,

Thanks for the tip. Yes, CCS was installed in the Program Files location. I downloaded a newer CCS version to install, so I will delete my current version and install the new one in a location other than Program Files.

    Eric

  • I'm having this problem as well, even though I have reinstalled to a non-Program Files directory (I'm using Windows 7 as well).  For me, the updater seems to hang on "C6000 Code Generation Tools".  I'm trying to get the MSP430 compiler update (3.3.3), but I can't only select that option for the code generation tools because I'm not getting past the checking for updates step.  Any other potential issues you can think of?

    Thanks,

    Erik

  • Erik,

If you search for new features instead do you still get the same error?

    John

  • Hi Guys,

I downloaded setup_CCS_4.2.3.00004.zip from the CCS DVD image site and installed that in C:\Texas Instruments... This made no change to the behavior of Update Manager; it still got hung up. I decided to delete the references to C:\Texas Instruments\ccsv4\eclipse\jre\bin\javaw.exe in the Windows 7 Firewall (there were 3 or so), and then I manually added that executable to the Firewall permissions list (just private networks in my case). I allowed Allow'ed all rules in the Firewall Advanced Setting. Not sure this is making any difference, however. Just a thought to look into.

    Eric

  • One other thought is that there is a proxy config inside CCS.  I wouldn't have thought you would have gotten that far if it wasn't working though.

If you go to windows->preferences.  Type proxy in the filter box on the top left.  Then click on Install/Update.  At the bottom of the screen on the right will be a way to configure your proxy.  By default it tries to read the info from your browser but it is possible manually specify a proxy.

    john

  • I have the same problem , it hang when updating.. "searching.... ; Contacting Code Generation Tools Updates...  The percentage  varies.

Also the Help:about says I'm running 4.1.3  While the Install Log says I'm running 4.2.3..

    Any help.. I'm losing time

  • Here is an Error message I get:

  • Hi John,

I have tried the "search for new features to install" option, with the same result.  I also am not using a proxy server, so I don't think that would be an issue.

The interesting thing is that it seems somewhat hit-or-miss.  Just this morning I tried again and it got through, but for some reason I didn't see any MSP430 GCT updates, just C2000.  When I tried again, it got hung up.  My internet connection is good and I've tried shutting off my firewall, and I can't think of anything obvious it might be.  The behavior really is quite odd.

    Thanks,

    Erik

  • Regarding the MSP430 Codegen updates: these will not be shown in the update manager for releases prior to 4.2.4 unless you select the "check for new features" option. This is only true for MSP430 and is due to some missing feature information in the install.

I'm not sure why the other behaviour described here is being seen. A brief description of what is going on behind the scenes might help in tracking this down.

In CCS v4.x, CCS uses the Eclipse update manager to manage updates. The later version of Eclipse used in V5.x uses the "p2" replacement for update manager. When update manager is searching for updates, it tries to read a file from the update URL for each feature. For the TI codegen features, this file is:

      http://software-dl.ti.com/dsps/dsps_public_sw/sdo_ccstudio/codegen/Updates/full/site.xml

The site.xml file describes the updates available from this site.  To check the file is accessible to Eclipse, you can open the internal Eclipse browser (Window -> Show View -> Other -> Browser), and enter the above URL in the browser address bar.

If the site.xml file is readable from Eclipse, but the update check still does not complete, we will have to look elsewhere.

I've verified the update check on Windows 7 with CCS v4.2.3 completes OK. This was from within the TI network though.

  • Hi Andy,

Thanks for the reply.  I just tried accessing that link with the internal Eclipse browser, and it appears to have loaded fine.  However, the updater still hangs.

When I click "Run in Background" for the updater, and then use the internal web browser, I can still access the XML url, but the updater status doesn't change.  Also, when I click cancel on the updater task, it doesn't exit and stays at the last percentage complete.

I have noticed that when I click refresh on the browser, it fails to load properly sometimes.  When I use my normal web browser (Firefox 4), this is the case as well.  It usually loads the first time, but when I click refresh it often says "The connection was reset" and doesn't load.

I wonder if the issue has to do with external network access to that server.  Do you have a way to test it on a non-TI connection?

    Thanks,

    Erik

  • Same action as Eric same results...

Update Manager still hangs also...  Is this being address as a problem or?

  • I hate to be a "me too'r" but I have the same results as above with  Version: 4.2.1.00004

I am downloading 4.2.3.00004 right now to see the same thing happens.

  • Nope, updating to 4.2.3.00004 didn't help. I thought perhaps my firewall might have contributed but for the purposes of testing I unloaded it (and therefore was wide open) however that did not change the fact that it still hung.

Also of note; when I "cancelled" the Update Manager updating, and progress reported it as cancelled. When I re-tried Update Manager (Help -> Software Updates -> Find and Install ..." I received a message box informing me "Another Install/update job is in progress. Please cancel it and then re-launch this action"  which is, of course, what I tried to do.

Does this mean that in order to update that I'll have to download and fresh install each time? Not sure but a real solution would be really nice.

  • The update site contents seem to be correct and working for some customers. On the chance there is a problem with one or more of the external servers that host the updates, I've escalated the issue.

  • Update: After playing around with this a bit it seems that my 4.2.3 install consistently stalls at "Searching:...TMS470 Code Generation Tools" . Not sure if that helps or not. Never gets by that.

  • Thank you Andy.  I have a bit more information ....

I downloaded the "site.xml" file and hosted it locally but replacing the url with

    in place of "features/"

While I could not complete the entire update I was able to recreate the problem using this local file and had some success in editing this file and removing the TMS470 references.

I noted in that "TI Inside" commented section there was no TMS470 Category Def. Sorry, my xml isn't that good so I'm not sure if this would cause the update to hang. That said, when I removed all TMS470 references and ran the update I managed to get all the way through to select the required updates however they unfortunately failed. At least it didn't hang.

    Anyhow, I hope this helps.

  • Something happened. Was anything changed? It works today .... at least for me. Thanks.

  • KevinF,

Thank you so much for the info posted above!

I still haven't gotten to the bottom of the issue, but I did find a couple of things. First, I was able to reproduce the problem locally (thanks Starbucks :)). The problem seems to be made worse by the number of updates on a particular update site. I have temporarily reduced the number of updates being hosted on the codegen site to get things going again.

Second, you noticed there is no category in the XML file for the TMS470 codegen tools. Thanks for passing that along. That will cause the TMS470 updates to appear as "Other" in update manager rather than being labelled with a more descriptive name, but it should be a factor in the hanging problem.

  • Hey Guys,

It's working for me now too.  Nice job!

    Thanks,

    Erik

  • Hi

Wish I could say the same for me.. Some progress has been made it appears to download the updates but  when it prompts  that CC4 need to restart and restarts I get a message box stating "Application Error" for each update that was downloaded.  If I go bad an attempt to get the updates it's reported that NO updates are available. But the  Version number does not change..

Also I get this error message:

Network connection problems encountered during search.

  • David,

I just wanted to confirm I've got the sequence you are running correct. When you answer "yes" to the restart question, does Eclipse exit and restart before giving the error messages?

A couple of other questions: Which Windows OS are you using, and what is the CCS install path?

The network error message you see looks like it is related to the Stateviewer plugin installed in your Eclipse. I'm not familiar with this plugin. There does not appear to be an update site hosted at the URL provided by this plugin. I'd like to address the other errors and come back to this.

  • Thanks for get back promptly.  You requested info:

OS -  XP (Pro 64 bit)

    Directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\Texas Instruments\ccsv4

And yes when I clicked the "Yes" button to Restart CC4

I reloaded the updates and get the same results, error window, when I manual closes CC4 and restarted it

    Dave

  • Here is some more Info:

I Restarted CC$ manually, closed teh app and then restarted the application a the results were:

    Same Application Error as above

After about three Application Error windows I got thiswindow:

A few more Application Error windows

Then TMS470 Code Generation Tools Setup window that HUNG

  • Dave,

I haven’t been able to come up with an explanation for the update issue you see. I tried this out a few times on XP 64-bit Pro, and it seemed to go fine.

Would you be able to zip up the contents of this folder and post it here:  C:\Program Files (x86)\InstallJammer Registry\

There are some log files in there that might shed some light. Note the folder may be hidden.

When update manager downloads an update, it will store it in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Texas Instruments\ccsv4\eclipse\features folder. It will also keep a list of installer executables it needs to run after eclipse is restarted in the configurations folder.  When Eclipse is restarted, Eclipse.exe goes through the list of updates and runs the ANT script associated with each of the updates. From what you are describing, it sounds like Eclipse.exe is unable to run either the ANT script or ANT is unable to run the installer executables. Since we’re using the ANT built into Eclipse, the former is probably not the issue.

We could verify the downloaded installer executables are (or are not) corrupted by: (1) letting Eclipse complete the download of the updates, (2) navigating to the features folder for each of the downloaded feature updates, and (3) starting each EXE individually from the features folder to see of there are any application error dialogs.

  • Here it is..

Also  no when I do Help:Software Updates:Find and Install: Searhc For New... and select Code Composer Studio Updates and Code Generation Tools Updates

  • David,

The log didn't help suggest any direction. At this point, I think we could do one of two things. First, you could download and install the full CCS release from here. This would  ensure you have a clean, consistent installation with the latest version of all components and would be the most straight forward approach.  I would recommend installing somewhere outside or "Program Files" just i case there is an odd permissions issue we're running into.

The second possibility would be to arrange a Webex/Teleconference to see if I can work out what has caused the problem with your install and try to resolve the issue. This could be time consuming and success is not guaranteed so it would be a distant second choice.

Regarding the network connection problem: this is being caused by the StateViewer plugin from High Integrity Systems. I downloaded and installed this plugin from their website and see the same problem. Their feature defines an Eclipse update site that does not exist. This problem would need to be address the vendor.

  • Andy

I understand the High Integrity system problem thus uninstalled it.. When I check for updates it repsonse is that there are NONE,  But in teh Help:About  states I have " Version: 4.1.3.00038 " which is far from the current..

I would hate to go through the whole process of installing another copy to work around this issue, because installing a new copy for an update does not not make sense to have a update feature..

    Dave

  • Andy,

Looking into the folder where the updates are stored '...eclipse\features'  the executable for the cc ver 4.2.xxxx is corrupt.

Also my virus program AVG has detected that some files installed by the and for CC 4 have a virus (Win\Huer} and others  have a signature errors..

    Dave

  • Is this topic dead?

  • David,

I had another thought. Could you download and unzip this zip file? This is the same as the patch that is posted via update manager, but we can run this locally instead.

After you have it unziped to a local folder, please open a Windows comamand window and CD to the folder location where "CCS_Update_4.2.3.00004.exe" exists. Then, run this from the CMD prompt:

    CCS_Update_4.2.3.00004.exe /mode default /prefix "C:\Program Files (x86)\Texas Instruments\" /updatename CCS_Update_4.2.3.00004

Where "C:\Program Files (x86)\Texas Instruments\" is the location where you have installed CCS (not including the "ccsv4" part). Parts of the update run silently, so give it time to complete. You might also get a file copy error during the update. Please just click OK to ths dialog.

If that doesn't work, please contact me via the email in my profile.

  • Andy,

Thanks.. Did as you request, last post, and the upgrade was successfully, CCv4 load and siaplays the updated version.  I have not loaded any projects since no runtime comments. That will happen this tomorrow or sooner if time permits.

    Thanks

    Dave

  • I also have this problem.  I can reach the page "http://software-dl.ti.com/dsps/dsps_public_sw/sdo_ccstudio/codegen/Updates/full/site.xml" in my browser just fine, but I always get the errors when CCS tries to grab updates.  I am now in need of updates because my counterparts at another site have updated and I can no longer build the projects that I am getting from them.

The errors are connection timeouts to this URL: "http://software-dl.ti.com/dsps/dsps_public_sw/sdo_ccstudio/codegen/Updates/full/site.xml".

Help->About shows that I have Version 4.1.2.00027 and I don't believe updates have ever worked for me.  This is a Platinum licensed version.

    Thanks!

    Rich von Lehe

  • Bump.  Does anyone have a wiki page addressing this problem? It seems to be fairly common.

  • Hey Rich,

Saw you 'bumped' this. What I would try is to download the latest install and perform a fresh install of the latest. I know that doesn't sound nice but my 4.1.x never did update. I installed 4.2.x which didn't initially update either but eventually started to work* and has been ever since.

    Cheers, Kevin

    * I say eventually because Andy (TI) was working on the issue and it started working after he did some Starbucks testing. Local (to me) tests showed that I could get going by downloading the xml and changing the default locations. A hack for sure but it did allow me to get through the hang.  I abandon that hack after the 4.2.x install started working.

  • Kevin,

So if I understand, you grabbed the xml file: http://software-dl.ti.com/dsps/dsps_public_sw/sdo_ccstudio/TargetContent/Updates/full/site.xml and stored it locally on your machine.  Then somehow you told CCS to visit this file instead of the one out on the web?

How did you tell CCS to visit your local file?

    Thanks,

    Rich

  • Apologies Kevin,

I went back and found a post in this thread that I must have missed from page 1.  From within 4.2.3 (I did a manual upgrade from 4.1.2), I updated the CCS proxy settings from system to custom.  Things are clicking along fine, now.
