What is the meaning of "Active build Configuration"

Hello together, can anyone give me some link, where I can understand what is the function of this window in Code Composer (Right click on any file -> Active build Config.).      I had my old code which  was running on FLASH and when I was looking at the "Active build Configuration" window I had two entries

- FLASH (as active one)

- RAM

now I have to connect parts of my code with another software. This another software has another two entries,

- Debug

- Release (set as active)

I have to run the new code also on FLASH, and sofar I understand I need - FLASH (as active one).

I am bit confused.

Thanks in advance.

  • Hello,

Project build configurations are documented in the CCS Help under ('Code Composer Help->Tasks->Working with CCS Projects->Configuring Projects').

Briefly - a build configuration defines a set a build options at the project level. It is useful if you need to switch between different sets of options. Instead of changing it all the time or maintaining multiple projects, you can simply have multiple build configurations. An example are the default 'Debug' and 'Release'. The 'Debug' configuration usually has no optimization enabled and full symbolic debug enabled. This is so you can easily debug your code. 'Release' will often have optimization enabled and symbolic debug disabled. This is when you want your code as small or as fast as possible you do not plan on doing source level debug.

People will create their own configurations also. Like 'FLASH' and 'RAM'. The difference between the two is that they probably have different linker options. One will allocate your code in FLASH memory, the other in RAM. But really, it is just different build options.

    Hope this helps

  • Hi Ki, thx for your response.

Some additional question, how do I know where does my code run from. If it runs from FLASH or RAM, where can I check it? Is there any window in Code Compose which tells me , NOW YOUR PROGRAM RUNS IN FLASH !

    thx

  • CCS will not tell you if you are running from FLASH or RAM. You will need to determine that yourself. Some ways to do this is to check the debugger memory map and see if where the code is running from is read only memory.

  • Hi Ki-Soo Lee, first thx for your response.

I would like to understand it completelly, so few more questions...

    1. I am trying to run my code in FLASH (starting address - 0x3F4000), now I took a look at my "Memory" window. It looks for me that I am really running it in FALSH, do you agree??

    2. You wrote "and see if where the code is running from is read only memory", why read only memory? So far I understand ROM isnt RAM or FLASH, but I have some data in ROM memory too! I dont understand it, I thought if I am running my software in FLASH, that the WHOLE data, code, etc. is stored in FLASH! Am I wrong?
