How to run Terminal in Code Composer Studio v5 ?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430G2553

I would like to run the terminal in CCSv5 to communicate with msp430g2553 on LaunchPad via UART. (Hardware UART and cross jumper to switch rx,tx)

But when I run Terminals (View >> Other >> Remote Systems >> Terminals), the terminal window appears but there is no "Terminal Settings" button.

In the Terminals window is just an instruction:"To open a terminal, right-click the Terminal subsystem under the target. Then select 'Launch Terminal' from the context menu."

Version of the CCS: 5.1.0.201105121800

OS: Win 7 Pro, 32bit, SP1

  • At work right now but I can take a stab at writing up some instructions on how I got mine working at home later tonight.

A work-around would be to use the Arduino Terminal window.  That might be more work than its worth if you dont already use the Arduino IDE.

  • Hi Dorijan,

may I ask exactly what you wish to do?

Are you trying to use the console to output certain information or for example use printf?   Are you trying to directly connect with the UART port?

    Lisa

  • Hi Lisa,

I am trying to directly connect with the UART port.

Currently I am using the "Bray Terminal" but it is annoyingly robust (It doesn't matter, if I disable the parity or triple the bandwidth it still works) which makes it harder to debug the code, because when instead of the PC I try the msp430 to communicate with an other IC (Siemens TP-UART that has 9600bps, even parity, 1 stop bit) it sometimes work and sometimes doesn't.

I have no need for printf since data is made just of HEX handshakes and services.

So when I noticed in Part7 video of LaunchPad workshop that CCS has terminal integrated I hoped that it would be more picky. In the video seams that setting the terminal in CCSv4 is pretty much straightforward but in CCSv5 I couldn't get past the message neither find a solution in help or on the internet.

  • Hi Dorijan,

I have followed the instructions here (have you as well? Did you install the rxtx package?) and have no problem with the terminal.  As seen in the attached screenshot I can open the settings.  On the bottom right the green or yllow buttons on the terminal window should open settings for you,

Please let me know if this helps.

  • Hi Dorijan,

I just thought I would follow up to see if the wiki helped and you have the terminal now.

    Best Regards,

    Lisa

  • Yes I have terminal now. Thank you.

Sub-question: Can you tell me why adding "UCA0CTL0 = UCPEN + UCPAR;" to example string echo code, doesn't work consistently?

  • Hi Dorijan,

    I am glad to hear :  )

Regarding your other question.   If checking that the settings on both ends are matched (typical problem causer for UART) does not uncover the reason for instability, then I would almost say it might be best to try the MSP430 forum.   Make sure both sides have the same settings.  Make sure you reset/restart the UART on the MSP after making the change.

If you find other terminals have the same issue then I suspect the above is the case.

    Best Regards,

    Lisa
