Running through S/W Installation and My First MAVRK Application (using Code Composer)

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F5328, MSP430F5438

OK. I cracked open the cellophane off of the Wiki today and went through the S/W Install Instructions at:

 http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/MAVRK_Software_Installation_Guide

All went relatively smooth (yes, I didn't read through the install instructions completely, and yes, I had to re-install Putty, TortoiseGIT, and GIT a few times,) and I only have ONE question. What are the GREEN CHECK MARKS next to all of the Explorer directories? Backup verification? I don't HAVE those!

Then, I started the My First MAVRK Application tutorial.

http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Software_-_My_First_MAVRK_Application_(Using_Code_Composer)

Eventhough I have IAR tools installed (I HATE IAR's GUI,) I decided to use CCS. I uninstalled CCSv4 and installed CCSv5. This is due to some ambiguity in the MAVRK docs on whether the user NEEDS CCS v5 or not. According to the My First Application tutorial - the answer is No.

So, I am running CCS v5.1 M6 release. BTW, when CCS came up and the Welcome window tried to come up, I got a lot of Permission Denied errors - but that's a CCS issue.

I did run into one issue right out the gate with CCS v5.1. After I imported and built the project, started a debugging session, downloaded the code to my MAVRK board, and hit the GO button, when I stopped execution and tried to re-start execution, nothing happened on the board!!!

I terminated the debug session. I then tried setting a bunch of breakpoints in Template main (on EVERY LED toggle,) and walked through all of them, I then tried RUN -> Skip all breakpoints, which looked like it would work, but then I hit the GO button again and nothing happened. I terminated the debug session again, and restarted it, hit the GO button and the program executed flawlessly skipping all my breakpoints.

Someone should look into THAT issue - again, likely a CCS v5 issue.

Hey! On another note. I LOVE my MAVRK board - Thank You!  I didn't know what to make of the AFE Breakout board, but now that I've run through the My First App. Tutorial - VERY COOL!    WOW!!  Those LEDs are getting TOO hard to see! I didn't even know they were there!!

    Gerry,

the "Green Check Marks" are only icons from the tortoisegit. I am not an expert in the GIT/Tortoisegit, but i think this should be similar to the icons from the tortoisesvn:

    http://tortoisesvn.net/docs/release/TortoiseSVN_en/tsvn-dug-wcstatus.html

Regarding the running the example codes on CCS, after importing the project into CCS v4, i got the following message:

It seems maybe that the makefile is missing?

  • Intesting. I did  not get this error when using CCS v5.1.  And this project built just fine after importing.

Could the missing green check-mark be a Windows 7 anomaly?

  • Hi Gerry,

There does seem to be a difference with Windows 7.  You can turn on the feature by setting the icon overlay status cache to None.  See the wiki information below for a visual of this option change.

  • The TortoiseGit FAQ reference to this does not make sense:

" To see them in Windows 7, pull up the TortoiseGit Settings (opposite mouse click anywhere on a repository file) and select the Icon Overlays option.  Change the "Status cache" option to None. "

The above does a quite effective job of turning them off. Did you mean to add " and then turn it back to Default"? Or something other than None?

What I did notice is that the Red Exclamation marks DO seem to work. However, if the files I pulled match the server, then the Green Check marks should be showing and they don't. BTW, the above Setting in TortoiseGit needs to be set to something other than None for you to see ANY icons.

  • Gerry,

On the Windows 7 system I tested yesterday, the icons came on in any mode except the default. I could make them go away by going back to default mode. The shell modes also seem to show the icons. It seems there is room for improvement of TortoiseGit in Windows 7. I have noticed many improvement over the last year as the put out new releases. So when a new release comes along, it is good to upgrade.

  • Just an update. A week or so ago, I did a Check for Updates with TortoiseGit, and there was an update - version 1.7.3.0, and after I applied this update and re-booted my Windows 7 machine, the icons straightened themselves out - for the most part.

There is one folder in the structure that has no TortoiseGit Icon. When I imported the Basic_MAVRK_MSP430F5328_Template, the .project and .cproject file were modified by CCSv5.1 M8. In the file structure marvk_embedded\Modular_EVM_projects\System_Demo_Projects, the folder for System_Demo_Projects just shows a folder icon. The other folders in the hierarchy show red eclamation marks, and even the Basic_MAVRK_MSP430F5438_Template folder below has one too (as does the .cproject and .project files.) ALL other files and folders and files under mavrk_embedded show green check marks.

    Curious, huh?

  • As the CCSv5.1 continues to improve as a major release nears, I am not surprised by changes to the .cproject and .project files.  I have seen changes in compilers coming in as I have followed the upgrades.  You can choose to revert these changes before the next time you pull.  We will be pushing changes to these files on our next releases.
