Slowly programe loading

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM3517

I use CCS V4 with emulator XDS 100v2. I run CCS on my PC (Celeron 2.6GHz  2GB RAM, win XP).

When I load programe (about 60kB) to my target board, I have to wait 25 seconds. In this time CPU of my PC is busy in 100%.

Why does this process ocure so long?

What should I do to speed up it?

  • What device are you programming?

XDS100v2 performance varies by device and in general is slow.  XDS510 and XDS560 emulators offer much better performance.  XDS100 is essentially a bit banger.

    John,

I'm programming cortex A8 sitara (Crane board). I'm looking after that xds100v2 is slowly emulator, but no so slowly . It transfers 2kbytes per second.

Do you work xds100v2 with cortex A8?

I have another question why my cpu of  PC is busy 100% durin loading programe?

May be I have to set some options in my PC to speed up loading process.

  • Krzysztof,

I have used an xds100v2 with an AM3517 which is also an A8.  The A8 is probably the slowest for xds100v2.  We use that setup for one of our CCS workshops.  We don't download a lot using it as for the most part the A8 is running Linux and we are just doing execution control with the xds100v2.  2kb a second seems very slow though.  I would have expected more like 10-15.

The latest CCSv5.1 beta should have a 2X performance increase when using xds100v2.

When the debugger is running you will see high cpu loading as CCS will be constantly polling the target to check status.

  • John,

I 'm going  to load 15Mbaytes programe. Which emulator do you advice to use.?

  • Krzysztof,

Definitely not an xds100v2 for that.  Anything big I have done on the AM3517 has been booted from the SD card.  Then I just load the symbols in CCS and use the emulator for execution control.

xds560v2 class emulators are typically the fastest.  The Spectrum Digital XDS560v2 Traveller is one of the "cheaper" ones,  It is still $1100.  I have one of these and it is quite nice.

I would check around with your local distributors to see if there are any locally made ones that might be cheaper.

  • Thank you John

I have another idea to writr client monitor, which starts from SD and It loads the target programe by ethernet.
