C28346 Expirimentors Kit and Black Hawk USB2000 Controller Problem (License problem?)

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CSD, CCSTUDIO

After having successfully developed with an F28335 experiementers kit, I have upgraded to a C28436 DIM168 experimenters kit and can not start a debug session.

My 28355 development had used the experimentors kit onboard emulator (XDS100). I purchased a single user floating license and installed the CCS sw that came with it.  I also updated the SW until no further updates were offerred.

Since using the F28335, I have reinstalled the tools so that the target configuration would show the black hawk emulaters.  Although I can not yet use the license from the server our IT guy setup (he can't either) CCS appears to intitially think it is licensed in that it shows "C/C++ - Code Composer Studio (Licensed)" on the CCS banner line of the window.  At one time while using the tool version supporting the XDS100 on board emulator only, I had mistakenly used the 30 day license, and when it expired, I used a TI generated license file for that version of the tools.

When I import the Example_2834xLEDBlink project and try to debug it I first get the error dialog below:

Error connecting to the target:
Error 0x00000220/-1138
Error during: Execution, OCS,
Processor aborted debug context.

Additionally the CCS Window Banner changes to: "Debug - Code Composer Studio (Unlicensed)"

After clicking Retry on the error dialog, I get the new error dialog which follows.  This occurs after a delay of around 10 seconds.

Error connecting to the target:
Error 0x80000200/-1041
Fatal Error during: OCS,
Device driver: Problem with the Emulation Controller.
It is recommended to RESET EMULATOR.  This will disconnect each
target from the emulator.  The targets should then be power cycled
or hard reset followed by an emureset and reconnect to each target.

If I go the HELP->Licensing Options, I get the following error dialog.  Server name / path have been removed.

Help would be greatly appreciated.  In the mean time I will try to get something done with the simulator.

  • Hi John,

Unfortunately I do not know the answer to your issue.  I would suggest contacting Blackhawk at support@blackhawk-dsp.com.

I am also going to move this thread to our Code Composer Studio forum in case an expert there has any suggestions.  The link to this thread will continue to work after the move.

    Regards

    Lori

  • I think I first need to solve the issue with the CCS Floating License not getting served to my host.  See the message from CCS below:

I know I can not use the debugger without a license being served.

  • Hi John,

I think the issue is you were using a Free limited License.  You were using and XDS100 and this was allowed in this license type, however other emulators are not allowed.

So when you try to switch to a blackhawk emulator, this is why the license becomes invalid.

Please see this page, in particular the part I cut and pasted below.  Please keep us informed whether this is most likely the issue.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

    Free Licenses

We have a number of different free tools options available in CCS.

Evaluation License: When you download CCS from the web you can choose to generate a time limited evaluation license the first time you run the product.  This will allow you to use all of the features of CCS for a set peroid of time (30 or 90 days depending on version) so that you can evaluate TI devices and tools but at the end of that time period it prompt you to provide another license.

Code Size Limited (MSP430): There is a 16KB free code size limited license available for CCS.  For CCSv4 there is a separate microcontroller core image on the web.  For CCSv5 there is no separate download required.  With the code size limited license you can use all of the features of CCS, you can create production code but the object code size will be limited to a particular amount. In CCSv4 there was a 32KB limited version available for C28x, this is no longer available as you can instead use the free bundle license wiht XDS100 that has no limit.

Bundle License (Free Limited License): We include a free version of CCS with many of our community boards, DSKs and EVM (Evaluation Module) kits.  These kits come with a development board, software and CCS.  The CCS will only work with the onboard emulation on the board.  This free license can also be used with simulators or with XDS100 class emulators as well as the XDS560v2 mezzanine card available in C6000 multi-core EVM bundles.  You may use this version to create production code. Download the DVD image to use this license. This license will work with eZdsp kits. DO NOT USE THIS WITH EZ430 KITS

  • The problem I was having appears to have been an emulator connectivity issue rather than a license issues (although I still need to get the floating license working, a 30 day trial license my be working for now).  Changing to a slower JTAG bit rate seems to have fixed the problem.  TI may consider lowering the default bit rate for the Black Hawk USB2000 Controller.    For my configuration I am using a C28346 expirimentors board with the BH USB2000 emulator.

    John

  • Hi John,

ok I am glad you seem to have gotten it sorted and hopefully the new license setup will go smooth.

Odd that your error message mentioned the license.

    All the best with development.

    Lisa

  • Both issues are now resolved.  Apparently the default JTAG clock rate of my targer configuration was too high.

Regarding: "Odd that your error message mentioned the license."

The errors with the emulator and licening I believe were entirely separate.  I know a license is required to debug and am emulator and was not sure the problem were not related.

    John

  • Hi John,

ok, thanks for the update.  Glad to hear things got resolved.

    Best Regards,
