CCS5.1 Debugger - Problem Connecting to target MSP340F123

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F123, TPS3828

Hi,

I have spent several hours today to get connecting to MSP430F123 uC. The problem is exactly as "Posted by

  • Hi Juris,

if the board worked on v4 on the same computer then it is likely one of two things.  Let's check these and go from there.

Before modifying hardware, let's just be sure this is not a dll version problem.

Have a look in your device manager.  Does your FET show up as a CDC device?  Or other type of USB device?  Did CCS ask to upgrade your FET?  More information on switching between versions as well as an upgrade/downgrade utility can be found here:

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/MSP_Debug_Stack

Once we have eliminated that possibility, I would then see if it could be something to do with the capacitance as in the other case.

Basically we should try to find whether it is a hardware or software problem.

    Please keep us informed.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Dear Lisa,

    More information:

    1. Yes, the FET firmware was upgraded- at the moment I cannot use CCS V4- it do not recognize FET430UIF as valid device.

    2. Device manager: MSP-FET430UIF - CDC(COM27)

    3. I have checked the hardware - There IS NOT a capacitance- we are using TPS3828 and 47k resistance to make  RTS signal.

    4. During connection process I can see blinking some of LEDs on my board-  3 to 5 times (it happens very rapidly) during 0,5 seconds or less- the debugger is connecting to board.

    Best regards,

    Juris

  • Hi Juris,

    Thanks for the information.

Do you have both v5 and v4 installed?  The latest versions of each?  If not, I recommend updating to the latest version of either or both of ccsv4 /ccsv5.

Please try the following and keep us posted.    Have a look at the information on this wiki.  Download the upgrade/downgrade utility.   Do a downgrade to v2, as you are using v3 from the fact that the FET is showing as a CDC device.  Try in CCSv4.

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/MSP_Debug_Stack

If you have the time/energy you can then try doing an upgrade again to v3 and trying in CCSv5.

    Please keep us informed.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Hi Lisa,

My FET is back on V2. and CCSV4.x is working again.

The bad thing - all devices I have unsuccessfuly connected by CCS5.1 debugger are not working as well!

I expect the JTAG is seccured (the JTAG fuse is burned out).

If I use a completely new uC- the debugger can connect.

    Best regards,

    Juris

  • More information,

My success was very short- after first debugger connection and programm loading- connecting second time the target is unreachable again- I am stil using CCS4.

    I am confused completely:

    - Is my FET interface damaged?

    - or downgrading is not completely correct?

    Best regards

    Juris

  • HI Juris,

Let me see if I can get some feedback from my MSP430 colleagues here.  Was anything done in between the two attempts?  Do you know if there is something upgrading or downgrading the FET without your knowledge?  Did you use v5 in between?  Did v4 ask to do an update?

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Hi Lisa,

    The history is very short:

    1) According recommendations you sent - I downgraded a FET to v2.

    2) In CCS4 I opened a workspace and pushed a Debug button.

    3) The CCS updated firmware as usual, when we change a version.

    4) The connection was unsuccessful.- this was a target I used by CCS5.1 previosly.

    5) I changed target (PCB) to next one - before this was used by CCS5.1 as well.

    6) The connection was unsuccessful.

    7) I connected a absolutely new PCB to FET

    8) The debugger connected to uC and loaded a programm as usual. This moment I was not interesting in debuging, therfore I didn't performe any actions in debugger- I terminated a debug session instantly.

    9) When I returned to debugging next time- the connection to terget was unsuccessful. The programm is working, but debugger can't connect to uC.

I can see several LED blinking on my PCB while debugger is connecting to uC. I never seen such blinking before- but there were not connection problems for many years.

    Best regards,

    Juris

  • Hi Juris,

I have not yet had any feedback and am debating moving this to the MSP forum for you.  Is there any update?

    Best Regards,

    LIsa

  • Dear Lisa,

Actually I am waiting for new FET interface and MSP430F123 uCs. I will receive them today or tomorrow. Then I am going to check once again and inform you.

    Best regards,

    Juris

  • Hi,

The problem IS NOT CONNECTED IN ANY WAY TO CCS5.1 OR CCS4.

The problem is in my hardware - broken wire (TDO) in cable connecting FET interface to target board. The bad thing – it happened directly when I switched to CCS5.1.

I have to apologize to all had and will read this as well as to CCS Support and Development team.

    Best regards,

    Juris Sirs

  • Hi Juris,

no worries.  Thanks for the update and I am happy you found the problem.

    All the best with development.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa
