MSP-FET430UIF not usable in CCS 4.2.4.00033 after upgrade via IAR Workbench

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F5438A

I am in the process of writing a custom bootstrap loader program for the MSP430F5438A. and am using a the sample BSL that was written for the IAR Workbench as a starting point.  The latest kickstart version of this IDE required me to upgrade the firmware in the FET430 in order to debug my BSL.  SInce doing this, I can no longer access the FET430 via either CCS 4.2.4.00033 or the Elprotronic FET-Pro430 tool.  When I try to launch the debugger via CCS I get the following error message:

Error initializing emulator:
No USB FET was found

And when I try to access the FET via FET-Pro420 I get a message indicating the free version works only with TI FET adapters.  Attempts to restore the FET firmware to a previous version via this tool are also unsuccessful.

The "upgraded" FET continues to work with the IAR toolset.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can downgrade my FET to an older firmware version so I can resume using it with CCS and FET-Pro430?

Thanks,
Art

  • Hi Arthur,

you are exactly correct, I suspect this is due to the MSP430 v3 vs v2 dll.  Please see this wiki topic for more information and an upgrade/downgrade utility for you.

Please keep us posted whether this resolves the issue.  You may need to go back and forth between versions unfortunately to use all your software.

  • Hi Lisa,

Thanks for your quick response.  I suspect this will work, however, I do not seem to to have the downgrader tool on my PC.  Can you tell me where I can get it?

  • Hi Arthur,

it should be part of the package on the wiki.  In your start menu do you have Texas instrumetns->MSP-FET430UIF Debug Interface?

    Lisa

  • Hi Lisa,

No, I do not have this in my start menu.  The only thing I have under Texas Instruments is Code Composer Studio.  Did I somehow miss something in my install, or is this only included as part of CCSv5?

  • Hi Arthur,

I think I may see what is going on.   The upgrade/downgrade utility does not seem to come as a stand alone tool.  I seem to be able to confirm it comes with CCS v5.1 when installed.  Apparently not CCSv4.

Have you tried running an update in your CCSv4 to see if it will catch these MSP430 updates/tools?

Please keep me posted whether that works.  Otherwise we dig to see if there is an option other than running CCSv5.1 as well.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Hi Lisa,

Yes, upgrading to the latest version of CCSv4 is the first thing I tried.  My assumption is that since the DLL and driver versions included in the upgrade are older than those installed with the IAR Workbench, they don't get overwritten.

I'm thinking that maybe I need to un-install the Workbench, delete the DLL and drivers and then re-install the old versions.  I've downloaded them from the wiki just in case.  What are your thoughts on this?

    Thanks,

  • Hi Arthur,

it is hard to say if this is worth the effort for the simple reason the old tools will not mean an automatic downgrade of dll version.  We have at time also seen conflicts when different tools/IDEs are installed with different msp430 dll versions.

If updating v4 did not bring in the utility, then I will try to send you a version of the dll package which should install the upgrade downgrade utility.  Look for a friend request with offline ftp information.

Hopefully that will get you what you need.  Please let me know when you recieve the application and whether it helps.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Hi Lisa,

I have exactly the same problem. How could I acquire this downgrade utility?

    Regards,

    Simon

  • Hi Simon,

you can acquire it by installing CCSv5 or if you would like, let me know and I can send it to you in a conversation/friend request.

    Lisa

  • Hi Lisa,

    It works with CCSv5.

    Thank you,

    Simon

  • Hi Simon,

ok, glad to hear.  All the best with development.
