How do I upgrade code composer 4?

I need to update my code composer (and related tools) software to the latest revisions.  I go to Help->Software Updates->Find and Install and walk through the dialog.  CCSv4 downloads the files, but when it installs, it gets errors because I run code composer in a non-administrator account.

When I run the program in an administrator account, it complains it can't find the license file.

So two questions:

1) How do you update CCSv4 from inside a non-administrator account (is it possible?)

2) Where the heck is the license file stored so that I can point my administrator account to it?

Thanks,
Chris

  • Hi Chris,

I suspect the updates will only work with administrator privileges in your setup from what you describe.  So it is not likely you will be able to do any updating from a non administrator account.

Regarding the license file, this is odd.

When running CCS do you see "licensed"?    What type of license are you using?

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Hi Lisa,

When I run from my non-administrator account, it does indeed say "(licensed)" in the title bar of the window.  I am not using a floating license, it's stored (somewhere) on my computer.

When I run in an administrator, it asks me to specify the license.

    Thanks,
    Chris

  • Hi Chris,

ok, is it a purchased license or one of the free limited licenses?

At any rate, check Help->Code Composer Studio Licensing Information.   Go to the Manage tab and you should see the directory and further information there.

Try pointing CCS to that file when asked (in your administrator rights situation) and keep us informed.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Hi Lisa,

It's purchased.  I don't have the menu option you specify.  My Help menu has:

    Welcome
    CCSv4 Developer Site
    ---
    Help Contents
    Search
    Dynamic Help
    ---
    Key Assist...
    ---
    Software Updates >
    Licensing Options...
    ---
    About Code Composer Studio

Licensing Options takes me to a screen where I can get a temporary license or set a license file.  Clicking browse takes me somewhere the license file is not.

BTW, my version of CCS is 4.2.1.00004

    Thanks,
    Chris

  • Hi Chris,

yes I appologise for giving the v5 information.

For v4, the license file is a .lic file typically located in a hidden .TI folder.  Have a look at this wiki topic which should help you find the file.

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Licensing_-_CCS

Once again, please keep us informed.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Ok, I found the license file using the instructions on the wiki.  I set up CCS in my administrator account to use that.  Now I get:

Unable to complete action for feature "Spectrum Digital Emulation" due to errors.

Unable to create file "/C:/Program Files (x86)/Texas Instruments/ccsv4/eclipse/features/com.sd.ccstudio.emulation_4.2.3.02/sd_emupack_setup_4.2.3.02.exe". [C:\Program Files (x86)\Texas Instruments\ccsv4\eclipse\features\com.sd.ccstudio.emulation_4.2.3.02\sd_emupack_setup_4.2.3.02.exe (Access is denied)]
    Unable to create file "/C:/Program Files (x86)/Texas Instruments/ccsv4/eclipse/features/com.sd.ccstudio.emulation_4.2.3.02/sd_emupack_setup_4.2.3.02.exe". [C:\Program Files (x86)\Texas Instruments\ccsv4\eclipse\features\com.sd.ccstudio.emulation_4.2.3.02\sd_emupack_setup_4.2.3.02.exe (Access is denied)]=

As administrator, I would imagine I have access to those files....

    Thanks.
    Chris
  • I should note that I don't have a directory named

    /C:/Program Files (x86)/Texas Instruments/ccsv4/eclipse/features/com.sd.ccstudio.emulation_4.2.3.02/
but I do have one named:
    /C:/Program Files (x86)/Texas Instruments/ccsv4/eclipse/features/com.sd.ccstudio.emulation_4.2.1.8/

    Thanks,
    Chris
  • Hi Chris,

may I ask if you are using Windows 7?  I ask because some Windows versions, especially WIn 7 really don't like programs using/writing to the Program Files Directory.

I would unfortunately have to recommend trying the installation and then update from a different directory (eg C:\TI )

Please once again keep me posted.  I do not think this is your account settings but a windows annoyance now.

    Best Regards,

    Lisa

  • Hi Lisa,

I am indeed using windows 7.  So, to be clear, are you recommending that I re-install CCS to a new directory (C:\ti) and then trying the update?   Or is there a way I can tell eclipse where to download it's install executables?

    Thanks,

    Chris

  • Hi Chris,

yes, I would say install the currently posted version in a different directory and go from there doing a search for updates.  Unfortunately, Win 7 does cause some problems using hte program files directories as mentioned.

    Please keep us informed.

    Best Regards,

    Lisa

  • Chris,

Just adding to Lisa's response, I am too using Win7 and to use CCS inside Program Files requires some tweaks that lower the security of your system. Check this forum thread for details.

    Best regards,

    Rafael

  • This was indeed the problem.  The solution was:

    1) I downloaded the latest copy of the CCS DVD
    2) Turned of User Access Control (which requires a reboot)
    3)  Installed CCSv4 in C:\ccs4 (I already had C:\ti with CCSv3.3 in it, which I didn't want to disturb.)
    4) Added my license
    5) Went through the update process
    6) Turned on User Access Control (which requires a reboot)

CCS was updated and I was able to compile my project without problems.

    Thanks,

    Chris

P.S. Rafael, thanks for the links to the other forum, that was very useful.

  • HI Chris,

    glad things got resolved.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa
