CCS 5.1 w/Piccolo

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430WARE, CONTROLSUITE

My customer said they saw a warning when installing CCS "don't use CCS 5.1 with Piccolo" - is this true?  If so why do we not want to use CCS 5.1 with Piccolo.  Thanks! Tara

  • Hi Tara,

that is odd.  That I am aware of Piccolo devices are supported in 5.1.  In fact I have regularly tried various control suite projects and you can also see that there is a even a control suite wizare which includes at least some Piccolo class devices.

DId the customer happen to get a screenshot?  Have they tried a project?

  • Lisa-

On the TI website http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Download_CCS, there are entries for several versions of CCS v5:

for v5.1.0, C2000 is not listed as having device support files, unlike other devices.  I have no interest in using it without support files.

for version 5.0.3,  5.0.2, 5.0.0 it says in bold type

    • Not recommended for MCU users (MSP430, C2000, Stellaris).

For version 5.0.1 this warning appears in red

Well over a year after v5's initial release, why does TI not support Code Composer v5 for these products?

    Regards,

    Cummins Allison Corp.

  • Hi Bruce,

while the C2000 family was not supported in the 5.0.x versions, it definitely is supported in 5.1 which is the production release.

I can verify this and as mentioned have been using v5.1 with the C2000 family ...

Can you please expand on the issue you see?  Because the device is supported.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Lisa-

All I know is the following:

    1) For the TI Piccolo motor control training our IT guy was directed to install CCS 4.2.4 on the laptops we'll be bringing to Schaumburg.  I can find out who gave him that direction if you wish.

    2) On the website I mentioned, the following appears in the Notes heading for 5.1.0.  C2000 is conspicuous by its absence.

    • This is a major new release of Code Composer Studio. It contains a lot of new functionality including a simplified user interface, upgraded version of the Eclipse IDE, new compilers, updated BIOS operating system... For more information check out the CCSv5 wiki.
    • Supports all TI embedded processors.
    • Installation Types
      • The web installer small package is an executable.  Download and run this.  When you make your installation choices it will then download and install the rest of the packages.
      • The offline installer is the complete DVD image in an archive file.  Extract this and you can run the setup program to install CCS.
    • Detailed Notes
    • Device and emulator restrictions apply to Linux version of CCS.
Check sections Emulator Support and Supported ISAs of the Linux_Host_Support

I had a chasearound getting the TI sample projects to work just to turn on an LED on the (in brief, the F28027 SDK came with CCS 3.3, had to upgrade to CCS 4 from TI website, then had to update the code generator in order to get it to compile and link).  Can I just use the CCS v4 sample projects for Piccolo as-is with CCSv5.1 or do I need new ones?  If so, where do I get them?  Do you have them?  I don't want to waste more time here.

    Thanks,
    Bruce

  • Hi Bruce,

ok the following two things should help clarify things for you.

By device support files ... these are xml files to add emulator support for these devices, not CCS support.    This is NOT a comprehensive list of supported devices.  In fact you can open CCSv5.1 and happily see the C2000 as an option, Stellaris, etc etc and as mentioned CCSv5.1 is what I use for all these devices.  Nothing special involved.

Regarding the training, this is likely because most of our examples and ControlSuite etc have been written in v4 so it is likely to avoid having to migrate everything and redo a bunch of the training and lab material.  Ie it allows the lab material to be used as is.

I hope this helps!  Please let me know.
