CCSv5 Install and no connect with MSP-FET430UIF “unknown device error”

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430AFE252

I am bounding through all the hoops to upgrade from CCSv4.2 to v5.1.

My MSP-FET430UIF is v1.4a.

I am debugging an MSP430afe252 device.

Upon import of the CCSv4.2 workspace, the debugger requested an update to the MSP-FET430UIF.

I preformed the update, then the debugger gave the error message “unknown device error”.

I read the E2E and wiki info, then used the program that came with CCSv5.1 called “MSP-FET430UIF v3 to v2 Downgrade” Upon reboot, I was able to debug the MSP430afe252 successfully with CCSv4.2 to confirm all hardware working correct.  Next I used the update command to make the CCSv5.1 the latest version, all well and good during this process.

So after reboot, I opened the CCSv5.1 and went through the update procedure again, same error message: unknown device error

On a tight schedule and need help ASAP.

PS, in the System Manager the UIF shows up as MSP-FET430UIF CDC (COM13) as it should.  I attempted to update the driver but it will not.

  • Hi

CDC indicates you have the v3 dll loaded which will only work in v5.  v4 requires, as you found the v2 dll.

You seem to be aware of the upgrade and downgrade necessary.

Have a look at this wiki just in case.

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/MSP_Debug_Stack

Also, check how you are powering the device.  There are a few known issues with the v3 dll currently.  One is the FET can not be used to power the device unfortunately (or at least is known to cause issues)

The other is some devices have been found not to work in the v3 dll.  If yours is one the only thing I can suggest is trying the patch the msp430 team posted here

    http://e2e.ti.com/support/microcontrollers/msp43016-bit_ultra-low_power_mcus/f/166/t/155784.aspx#593977

    Please keep us informed.

    Best Regards,

    Lisa

  • Dear Lisa,

Also, check how you are powering the device.  There are a few known issues with the v3 dll currently.  One is the FET can not be used to power the device unfortunately (or at least is known to cause issues)

Yes, I am powering the device from an external power supply.

The other is some devices have been found not to work in the v3 dll.  If yours is one the only thing I can suggest is trying the patch the msp430 team posted here

Time is short and I can not afford the trouble shooting time necessary to try this patch now.  I am doing a demonstration with this product next month and can not chance errors at this stage.

After reading the PDF that came with the patch, it is not clear to me if I will louse control, and not be able to use CCSv4.2?  Thus:

Q1) Here is the issue, my contract for CCS ends next month.  I will be gone on business in April.  Will I be able to fix all the issues in CCSv5.1 without the contract?

Q2) I have decided to wait for an 'official/tested' fix for this problem rather than start throwing things at it.  My preference is to use the built in CCS upgrade function in the help menu. If the answer to question 1 is yes, can you inform me when your team has corrected/tested the problem using the device (AFE) that I am using on v5.1?

Thanks your for your kind help!

  • Hi,

ok it sounds like perhaps the following might be a good option for you.

If you v4 license subscription ends soon, I would definitely upgrade to a v5 license.   A v5 license can still be used with v4 and it will also leave you ready for when the issue is fixed. You can do that via these steps and do not need a CCS v5 installation to keep a v5 license once you upgraded.

    • Go to www.ti.com/myregisteredsoftware
    • Find your row for TMDSCCS-ALLF03-v4.0
    • Click MANAGE and then click UPGRADE – GET NEW LICENSE
    • Click E-mail license - you will receive two (2) emails: Instructions and License File with attachment (.lic)
    • You MUST follow these instructions to save this new License File (.lic) before you can use your upgraded version 5.1

Regarding the problems you see with the v5 version you have.  All I can say is that unfortunately I do believe you device is one of the affected ones.  So if you are not comfortable with the patch then I would wait, as you indicate, for a release where these issues are resolved. My recommendation is to wait for 5.2.  This release of CCS is already in beta and actually online as a beta.

So please just check back as it is next to impossible for us unfortunately to track every case to individually send out notifications.

Does this help clarify a bit better?

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • If you v4 license subscription ends soon, I would definitely upgrade to a v5 license.

I upgraded to CCSv5.1 already by downloading the license file and program for CCSv5.1.

Here is the file I installed: CCS5.1.0.09000_win32.zip

If my subscription ends, can I still upgrade the above program to a full version (forgot the name "node locked?" to use on two computers) of CCSv5.2 through the help menu of the v5.1?  I appreciate that you are busy at TI, I am also busy, and want a full program of v5.2 to put on DVD when it comes out if it solves the problem.

If I can not do this after the subscription ends, I need a get out of jail free card! That is, am working on an MSP-AEF device and wanted the 24-bit capability of the v5.2, not the errors of v5.1, nor the 16-bit variable limits of v4.2.

Nothing is easy!  This account is not the same account I use for my business with TI, my software is licenced under another account.

  • Hello,

I am getting a bit confused.   It seemed to me you have a full license you already upgraded to a v5 license.  If this is the case, you will be able to download future v5 versions, like 5.2 etc as they come out.  Without a subscription, what you will not able to get are major new releases, eg CCSv6 ...

If you have not done the above or do not have a full license, then you will need one (unless using the free code size limited msp430 license) in order to move forward with v5.

What exact license setup to you have?  All of our releases are avalaible as a full CD/DVD image to download.  This is the zip file you downloaded for 5.1.09 for example.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • What exact license setup to you have? (forgot the name "node locked?" to use on two computers)

That is , I use the license used on two stand alone computers, I forgot the name of the type of license, it is a full version of CCS, not the free copy, not the one for a network setup.

I was sent a link for the download of v5.1.  Do I just down load the free copy of v5.2, then apply my present license to it?  OR, do you need to send me a link to the v5.2 image file?

  • Hi,

If you have a node locked v5 license, then as mentioned it will be no problem to download 5.2, 5.2.x etc going forward.

You will not need to be sent a link as we keep this wiki with CCS Downloads.

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Download_CCS

    I hope this helps!

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • My recommendation is to wait for 5.2.

Does this help clarify a bit better? Yes, Currently in holding pattern waiting to land!

Thanks for your fast response Lisa!  Good work!

  • No problem, that's what we're here for.  All the best with the development/project.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa
