Error initializing emulator:No USB FET was found

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F5438

Hi

I am using MSP430F5438 Target board .I was trying to load my exe files using MSP430 USB-Debug-Interface(MSP430 -FET430UIF).I was getting the following error:

"Error initializing emulator:No USB FET was found ".I have installed CCSV4 4.2.4. version in windows 7-32 bit.

Note:The same Target board and USB Debug Interface was working fine with CCSV5.1.0 .I have loaded exe files using the same FET430UIF.

I would appreciate it if anyone could help me resolve this problem.

Best Regards,

Srividhya.

  • Hello,

have a look here.  There are two msp dll versions, one works in v5 and one in  v4

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/MSP_Debug_Stack

    Please keep us informed.

  • Hello,

just thought I would check whether there is any update to your enquiry and if the wiki was helpful.

  • Hi Lisa,

The problem was in the FE Debug interface. It was failed to do the self-test.

    Thanks ,

  • Hi Srividhya,

ok, glad to hear it sounds like you have figured things out.

    All the best with development.

  • So what fixes this?

  • lol I love the post where someone admits to fixing their problem but doesn't share the how-to. Might as well say "Ur own ur own sucker!" lol

I had this problem. Not 100% sure the cause. I had other problems earlier with IAR in the past and had upgraded the firmware, and upgraded the driver, which likely led me to this CCS4 problem. I went to the page Lisa suggested, http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/MSP_Debug_Stack, downloaded the v2 drivers, which apparently is compatible with CC4 (v3 is not, it is for CCS5), deleted my old USB driver from the Device Manager and tried to re-install the v2 driver, but could not get the computer to recognize my device. I fixed this by installing V3 of the driver. I then downgraded the firmware from V3 to V2 (my company had a Windows command line utility to do this, hopefully there are utilities available online for others), and then tried CCS again and it worked. All documentation says to use v2 of the driver but mine is working with v3, I probably should downgrade the driver to v2, but I live by the motto if it ain't broke don't fix it.

    Hope this helps.

On a side note. I'm a little confused about the versions. Seems like there are 3 items with versions: 1) The firmware, 2) the USB/FET driver, and 3) MSP430.dll/HIL.dll. Are items 2 and 3 one and the same? Do the version numbers from items 1 and 2 need to match? Which combination of these versions is compatible with CCS3, CCS4, and CCS5?

  • I through out my "if it ain't broke don't fix it" motto too soon. It was broke I just didn't know it. v3 of the driver was able to load the code on the device but when I tried to debug I got errors about not being able to step through the code. After I downloaded and installed v2 (the VDC driver) I was able to correctly debug.

  • just change to another USB com.
