Code Composer Studio 5.2.0 - MSP430 - Hangs on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS GNU/Linux

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430F5438

Dear TI,

I could successfully install this version of 5.2.0.00069 of Code Composer Studio on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS GNU/Linux to use with MSP430 controllers only.

But when I try to create a new project and try to select a MSP430 variant, screen freezes and complete CSS hangs.

I could not figure out what could be the reason, seek your help and support in this regard.

Thanks and Regards,

Raghuram S

  • Hi Raghuram,

do you know if other targets work?  Are you trying to use a launchpad?  These are not supported in Linux yet.    Do you have all dependencies also installed?

Did you get any errors during installation?

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Linux_Host_Support#Installation_Instructions

A bit further information would help us.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Hello Lisa,

Did not test with other targets, installed only for MSP430.

Yes intended to use MSP430 Launchpad.

    Yes, all dependencies installed.

Not even a single error during installation, followed all steps mentioned in http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Linux_Host_Support#Installation_Instructions

I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32 bit version.

While creating a new project, if I just specify project name, directory and proceed with out altering the target processor the project is created.

Hangs only if I try to select target device. This also happens when I try to navigate through properties window of active project.

I have not compiled any project yet. Will update you on this shortly.

But, if Launchpad is not supported, I better wait for some time, else it does not serve the purpose.

If possible give some pointers using which I can experiment and try to bring up the Launchpad on Linux.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Raghuram S

  • Hi Raghuram,

unfortunately there is no work around or fix to use the Launchpad in Linux.  Would you be willing to try from a fresh installation?

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Hello Lisa,

Fresh installation too did not help.

I tried creating a project with default settings, and compile, it worked.

Look forward for fully compatible CCS for MSP430 on Linux by TI.

    Thanks for your support.

  • Hi Raghuram,

so you are able to create an MSP430 project successfully now then? Was it some setting? This might be of interest for us to know.

    Best Regards,

    Lisa

  • Hello Lisa,

No, problem still persists, selection of desired MSP430 target device still freezes the screen.

But if you accept default settings displayed by CCS and create a project and compile it works.

CCS selects MSP430F5512 by default as target processor, if the same is used and a new project is created, it works. With these settings I proceed with creating a main.c file, included <msp430f5438.h> header file, and tried to compile the same project. It simply worked.

It looks like the problem is to do with some Ubuntu display related components like Unity/Compiz or may be JRE too.

If I get to know some workaround or the actual cause for the problem, shall definitely let you know.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Raghuram S

  • Hi Raghuram,

    have you tried the following?

    - create the empty defauly project as you know works

    - change the device in the project

    - add files

In other words, is this limited to project creation?   I will see if I can reproduce the behaviour here.  It may take me a bit of time.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Hi again Raghuram,

a couple other things that might be worth checking here.

    - are you using the 64 or 32 bit version?

    - do you have all dependencies installed?

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • HI Raghuram,

just wanted to check whether there is any update to your enquiry and whether you have been able to go through the dependencies/provide further information.

    Best Regards

    Lisa

  • Hello Lisa,

As per my previous post, I stopped exploring CCS on GNU/Linux platform, since the Launchpad kit is not supported I took this decision.

We are using Windows7 for all our MSP430 related development now. Probably, even the MSP-FET430UIF does not work under GNU/Linux?

Well, if you wish to suggest some experiments with CCS on GNU/Linux, we are ready to take up, more importantly, support for interface of hardware development kits should also be provided.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Raghuram S
