Installed CCS5.2 but cant create a CCS project

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CCSTUDIO, STRIKE

Trying to get going with my MSP430 Launchpad board (and finding it slightly ironic that a 2Gb install is required to produce a 2Kb executable)

I did a fresh install (no previous versions of CCS) starting with the Windows Web Installer link from http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Download_CCS

All appeared to go OK but I seem to have ended up with a generic Eclipse install with no CCS-specific features.   When I choose "Project->New" I dont have a "CCS" option or any obvious places to specify my target MCU etc like the documentation suggests.

The only non-default thing I did was to change the install location from "C:\ti" to "C:\Program Files\TI"- after that I followed the defaults.  Did I miss an option somewhere?

  • Hello,

I think the problem is your installation directory.    The installer does not like either spaces or the program files directory in general.

Please try a clean install in the default (c:\ti) or similar directory with no accents/special characters or spaces.  Also please make sure antivirus is turned off and you have full permissions.

Please keep us informed, but the different directory should solve your issue.

    Best Regards,

    Lisa

  • Honestly?

     In 2012?

"C:\Program Files" has been the default install directory for one of  the worlds most widely-installed OS for 15 years or more and your installer is still tripping over a space in a directory name?  How hard is it to write an installer with properly delimited path names?  The eclipse components seem to manage it..

At the very least the installer should warn of this problem..

  • Hello,

yes unfortunate but it is worth giving this a try and keep us informed if that fixes things.  There is another issue with the program files directory and that is the funny permissions Windows puts on things here.

    Best Regards,

    Lisa

  • Tried again (using default C:\ti directory) with same result.   Noticed a few  "installation failed" messages in the installer window as it scrolled through and found a bunch of little error files in the "configuration" sub-dir.  They are all complaining about  "No Repo found.."

This install I started from the full offline kit (1.2G) and it still seems to go off and download stuff.

  • Hello,

have you tried from a fresh installation?  Would you be able to send us the contents of your installjammer registry directory? (this is under program files or program files(x86) ).

Do you install with antivirus turned off and full admin privileges?  Did you unzip the installer first?

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Lisa/

Yes, tried fresh install, admin rights, AV off , unzipped installer even reset the %TEMP% and %TMP% evironment variables to non-space paths without any change.  Happy to send you the installjam dir- not so sure about posting it publically though:  do you have someplace I can send it?

  • Hi,

you can post it here or start a friend/conversation request and send it that way.   There is nothing to worry about in these install logs and posting here allows easier access for my colleagues as well.
    Best Regards,
    LIsa

  • Hi Lisa/

        Heres the logs

  • Hello,

it does not look like things attached properly.  Please try again.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

Faced the same problem in Windows 7 x64. CCS5.2 was unable to install properly. Lots of "installation failed" messages resulted in "naked" Eclipse without any TI overlays. CCS5.1 sets up well enough to compile any debug code. After reading your message deeper investigation showed inability to UNZIP some repos.. The fact in my computer is that there is UNZIP.exe from even DOS times of my youth.. After renaming UNZIP.EXE to UNZIPx16.exe CCS installer has to use its own unpacker and has successfully installed CCS5.2. May be this would help you in your searches.

  • 1157.installjam.zip

Second try: the attachment appeared OK in the compose window but seemed to vanish in the submitted copy

Attachment went to http://e2e.ti.com/cfs-file.ashx/__key/communityserver-discussions-components-files/81/1157.installjam.zip in case its still missing

  • @Feu van Strike:  thanks for the info- I'm using WinXP SP3 32bit so pretty sure unzip is functional.   Glad to know I'm not the only one having trouble :-)

  • Hi,

it seems from the logs the issue might be the unzip utility the installer is trying to use on the pc.  I am going to get a colleague to help out here.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • I'm sorry you're having problems with your installation. I can't say why your initial installation failed, as those logs have been overwritten. If you're installing on windows xp, there's no problem with installing in c:\program files, which is why you didn't see any warnings. Windows 7 doesn't allow for updates through eclipse in that folder, which is why there's a warning on that os, and we recommend against installing there now.

Your current installation seems to be failing (ironically) because the TMP variable has been reset. It looks like a bug in installjammer. Could you try either setting your TMP folder back to the original C:\Documen~1\Randall\Locals~1\Temp or running from a new command prompt without the change to your TMP variable?  I'll open a bug report to try and fix this in the next release.

  • Just wanted to check whether there is any update to your enquiry.  Where Danishs tips helpful?

    Best Regards,

  • I had the same issue but the suggestion to remove unzip.exe from the path solved it for me. (I've had that in the path for quite some time and used CCS4.2.4 and the first CCS5.1 without a problem).

  • Hello,

you need you create a new CCS project in order to have access to our devices.  Also you need to launch from ccstudio.exe.

    Please keep us updated.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Cant create a new CCS project because it doesnt appear in the list of project types- I just get the eclipse standard ones.

I'm giving up on CCS5 and reverting to CCS4, at least it installs

  • How do you launch CCS?  You need to launch using ccstudio.exe.  Did you install over eclipse?

    Best Regards,
    LIsa
