Unable to select Blackhawk (or any other) debugger after installing full license over free license

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CONTROLSUITE

Having successfully used CCSV5.1 with the free license to connect to the Piccolo F28069 controlCARD, I installed the Blackhawk USB driver.  When I ran the Blackhawk scanning app it detected and reported the Blackhawk debugger, but it did not show up in the list of available targets in when I go to create a new target configuration- only the old emulators that I had had in the free version appear in the drop down.  I tried updating CCS (to 5.2) but had the same result.  I then realized that I only had the free versin installed, so I installed the license.  It now displays the full license to be effect in Help |  license information, but still no Blackhawk in the drop down.  This persists even after restarting CCS, and after rebooting the machine, and when attempting to create an entirely new project.  I'm sure I'm missing something obvious here- please advise.  Do I need to reinstall CCS???

  • Hi Bruce,

what OS are you using?  What do you see when you try to create a target configuration? Do you get any errors or just a blank drop down?  Are there further details you could provide?

    Best REgards,

    Lisa

  • Lisa-

Thank you for such a prompt response!  I wrote that from home last night but I can now provide you the answers:

    • I am running CCS on Win XP 2002 SP 3
    • When I try to create (or edit) a target configuration I get the same set of options that I had had from the free version, namely Data Snapshot Viewer, Other Simulator, TI Simulator, TX XDS100 v1/2/3.
    • No errors are reported, I just don't see the Blackhawk USB560 v2 (or anything else) that show up in the Blackhawk control Panel.
    • License Information View reports  status: Licensed, licnce type: full license message: you are licensed to use CCS, whereas before it indicated (correctly) that I was using the free license.

In short, the target configuration screen behaves exactly as if I had not installed the full license, despite having rebooted the machine.  Is there any other info I can provide?

    Thanks,

    Bruce

  • Additionally, the Blackhawk appears in the Blackhawk control Panel (32-bit) as being attached to the syst8561.Blackhawkscreen.docxem:

  • Hi Bruce,

did you have antivirus turned off when installing everything?  Would you be able to send a screen capture of  what you see when trying to create the target configuration/select the emulator?

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Lisa-

No I didn't (not allowed to on our corporate net) however CCS5 itself has been installed and operating correctly for a long time wit the EVM, the only issue seems to be with the license, although CCS correctly identifies the license as full.  Blackhawk was successfully installed and connected, although of course CCS should let me select it even if it happened to be disconnected at the moment.

  • Hi Bruce,

what device support did you install when installing CCS?  Did you simply update CCS and started seeing this behaviour?  Could you explain in a bit more detail?  Or is this a different or new installation?

I don't think this is license related.  The license is check upon debug and CCS does not block you from creating a target configuration not supported by your license.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Lisa-

I had installed the free version several months ago and have been using it with the EVM.  Given your statement about licensing not blocking me from creating a target configuration it seems like some portion of CCS 5 needs to be reinstalled.  However since I had also had difficulties getting CCS5 installed on my machine to begin with I'd like to avoid uninstalling if possible.  When I go to Help | Check for Updates I am told I'm up to date (now have 5.2.0.00070).  I also see various components and Update and Uninstall buttons- perhaps I could select from among them.  I have a CD for CCS as well but it's only 5.1 and I can't go backwards without removing it in toto.  However, if I'm fully licensed and up to date i don't understand why I have to do this.  Please advise.

    Thanks,

    Bruce

  • Hi Bruce,

what do you mean by "free version"?   What device support did you select to install?  One thing you could try is either

    - rerun the installer to the same directory to add the support for the emulators/further devices

    - try Help->Install New Software ... you should have some Blackhawk sites in the dropdown list.

    Please keep us informed.

    Best Regards,

    Lisa

  • Lisa-

I see no Blackhawk sites in drop down list.  I select TI Emulation - http://software-dl.ti.com/dsps/dsps_public_sw/sdo_ccstudio/CCSv5.1/Updates/Emulation/win32/full and get the response "Cannot com6136.blackhawkscreen3.docxplete the request.  See the error log for details.  "TI Emulation" will be ignored because a newer version is already installed"  See attached for screenshot of available dropdowns

  • P.S.

By "free" version I mean the eval copy that (I believe) I got with controlSUITE, although it's been awhile.  It said Free under CCS Licensing Information when I did the license info before installing my full license

  • Hi Bruce,

it would still be helpful to understand your installation history (what version(s) and how they were installed, via update ?  via new installation etc)   and what device support you installed please.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Lisa-

It was months ago, but I can forward you the emails outlining the problems I had with controlSUITE and the TI.com website.  As far as I know the only installation options I had at the time would have been the emulators I listed earlier in the thread since I generally install everything, but I may be incorrect.  In short, the history is:

    1. Free version of CCS5.1 installed from controlSUITE download from TI months ago
    2. Help | Check For Updates yesterday (updated to CCS 5.2)
    3. Help | Code Composer Studio Licensing Information | Upgrade yesterday to install full license
    4. Help | Check For Updates today- no change, up to date

Currently have C2000 Emulators 3.1.0.2 com.ti.c2000.support.win32.feature.group, TI Emulators 5.0.681.1 com.ti.emulation.pack.win32.feature.group and TI Simulators 5.2.4.16 com.ti.sim.pack.setup.win32.feature.group, among many others, displayed in Code Composer Studio Installatin Details.  The results of the Configuration tab appear in the attachment.  My guess is that CCS maintains a full installation history in a file somewhere that could shed some light if you could tell me where it is so I can send it to you.

    Thanks for your patience,

    Bruce

  • Hi Bruce,

yes, the contents of your installjammer registry directory (found under program files or program files(x86)) might help us here.  It also seems like either the update corrupted your installation somehow or else you for some reason still are not getting the correct device support into CCS.  If you could please send us the logs that might help?   Also have you tried rerunning the installer to add further device/emulation support?

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Lisa-

There are many files in installjammer:  can you be more specific about which log files you want or provide me an email address so I don't have to paste them all in this post one by one?

I can't run the CD I have for CCS 5.1 as I have CCS 5.2 installed

I keep running Help | Check for Updates but it tells me I am up to date:  How do I get a new installer if not through here?

What do you mean by "rerunning the installer"?  I don't see such a tool in my start menu under Texas Instruments.

    Thanks,

    Bruce

  • Hi Bruce,

if you coudl zip and send the contenst if the installjammer registry/ccsv5 folder that would be great.

By rerunning the installer I mean the CCS installation exe file to start the CCS installation again.  If you run it into the same directory you should be able to add device support.

    Best Regards,

    Lisa

  • Lisa-

As I've mentioned, I did the update to 5.2.0.00070 from the network vai Help | Check for Updates:  How do I rerun this installation since it keeps telling me I'm already up to date?

Interestingly, when I go to the XP Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs to roll back 5.2 so I can reinstall from the 5.1 CD I have, it reports that I have version 5.1.1.00031 when I click on click here for support information.  Why does this not agree with the version reported in Help | About since I've rebooted the machine several times now?  Is this a clue as to my problem?

    Here's the .zip3884.ccsv5_install_log.zip

    Thanks,

    Bruce

  • Hi Bruce,

ok, from this description now, I suspect you are unfortunately one of the ones affected by some earlier installation/update bugs we had problems with.  This puts you in a situation where CCS will not update properly.   The best thing I can suggest is to install the latest release using the full offline installer .   You can install it into a new folder and leave your current CCS or else you can clean out all your current CCS installation(s) first.

You can get the latest version here:

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Download_CCS

    Please keep us informed.

    Best Regards,

    LIsa

  • Lisa-

After a long install of CCS 5.2 I now see the Blackhawk dbeugger and many others.  I will try my existing project in this new environment but at least I have cleared the first hurdle in connecting to a real board.

    Thanks for your help.

    Bruce

  • Hi Bruce,

very glad to hear and thanks for the update.  Sorry once again you had to go through the inconvenience.

    Best Regards,

    LIsa
