Blackhawk XDS560v2 and Code Composer v5 upgrade questions

Hi,

I have an older system using the 5509A that was developed using an XDS510PP emulator and CCSv2. I've picked up development of this system initially using an XDS100 emulator and CCSv4. I was able to update the software, compile it and load it on the processors (it is a dual 5509A board). I can individually load and run DSP0 and DSP1 software, but I can't run both simultaneously. I presume this is a limitation of the XDS100. So, I want to update my tools but I want to make sure I understand the options correctly and am selecting the right things.

1) I presume I should use the blackhawk XDS560v2 emulator. It seems to be newer and better than the 510 and less expensive. I just can't use it on old CCS versions (prior to v4) which should not be a problem since still have my old development system and I want to use updated tools from now on anyway. Is this the best choice?

2) I notice CCSv5 is the only one listed. I have CCSv4 that came with some evaluation tools so I had used it to do the initial update of my software. Is there much difficulty in updating software from v4 to v5?

3) If I get the node locked version of CCS, can it be moved if I upgrade my laptop? How often can I move it? How to I move it?

4) Is there an upgrade path from CCSv2 or do I buy the full new version of CCSv5?

5) If I install CCSv5, should I uninstall CCSv4?

Thanks.

Are the two DSPs on the same JTAG scan chain or do you have two separate XDS100 emulators, each connected to a separate board? Both should be supported in CCSv4.1 and greater.

Certainly the 560v2 is best choice if you have the budget for it. The performance is excellent and as you pointed out, the price is competitive when compared to the older XDS510. Blackhawk is an excellent vendor also and one that is supported out of the box (along with Spectrum Digital) with CCS.

There have been several changes (hopefully all for the better) but the learning curve from 4->5 should not be bad. The vast majority of people loved moving to v5 as it addressed many of the glaring v4 issue. It is basically the same environment as 4, but improved.

There are some docs that highlight the changes:

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/CCSv5_Changes

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/images/4/4a/CCSv5-WhatsNew.pdf

Slide 17 of the above PDF says it best though. Basically the learning curve going from 4->5 is nowhere near the brutal 3->4 (or 2->4) experience.

That said, CCSv4 DOES support the 560v2. Though we strongly recommend moving to v5, you can still use v4 if you wish to.

Your questions should be answered in the below FAQs:

If you kept your v2 subscription active after all these years, then you can get a full CCSv5 license for free. Otherwise you will need to purchase a licenese. The good news is the cost of a full CCS license has come down quite a bit in recent years.

It's not necessary... just do not install v5 over an existing CCSv4 installation directory.

But if you have no plans to go back to v4, then might as will remove it just to free up space. But that is your call. Note that a CCSv5 license also works with v4.

  • Thanks Ki,

    Your comments were very helpful.

My DSP chips are indeed chained on the same JTAG interface.

  • Cam,

If it is on the same scan chain, it should work. But you will need to configure it via the advanced setup section of the target configuration utility since the basic setup normally works for single device setups or DSK/EVMs and kits.

    http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Target_Configuration_-_Custom_Configurations

Just pick two 5509A devices after you select your connection type. It should looks something like:

    Thanks

  • Hi Ki,

This is how I had it set up. Will this work too or is it incorrect? (note two cpu's under same device heading).

With this I could run the programs individually on each cpu but when I tried running simultaneously, I had problems, thus I was thinking the XDS100v2 was under powered.
