Recovery from 'upgrade'

In a moment of insanity I let CCS do an upgrade yesterday, no suggestions on how to recover?

I had an installation from may based on 5.2.0.00069 that I have used daiily since then, after the upgrade i lost my SeedDSP debugger which I just reinstalled to fix but I have lost things like the CPU and thread load graphs.

I tried messing around a little upgrading all the bits and bobs to the latest versions with no luck.

I tried using the eclipse revert with no luck.

I am trying reinstalling the version from may from disk no but I am don't hold out much hope it will get me out of this mess.

The alternative is to let it upgrade again and fix the rtsc/rta etc - what is the known good set of versions that might work again?

    Hi Chris,

    has a fresh installation of the latest version (recommended) into a new directory helped?  How did you initially install CCS?  Would you be able to send the contents of your installjammer registry directory?  (under program files or program files (x86))?

    Any further details would be great.  Is it only the SEED drivers you lost?

    Well blatting back v5.2.0.69 did not work, it installed ok over the top of whatever was there, but I still have no analysis type tools.

    The seed drivers behaved quite well, I just did a repair to get my debug pod back.

    Next I suppose an uninstall followed by a fresh install of the original.

    I have no end of log files saying rta classes did not load etc, you are welcome to any of them, the installjammer folder is 6 mb compressed, attached I think...

    Hi Chris,

    I would try a fresh installation in a new directory using the latest version.  Please double check for antivirus interference, unzip issues and do not use any directories with spaces or accented/special characters.

    I did an uninstall, then an fresh install of 5.2.1.18, then let it fully update itself, this installation would compile but still had no profiler type functions. Worse than that it broke my SeedDSP emulator, at the bit where it now says that the first time will take a few minutes - it was more like hours. (An empty project in this installation had things like the ROV screen.)

    I uninstalled this, at least I tried, it fell over with loads of jvm errors, I did it a few times and then pressed on with installing the old ccs v5.1,

    This could not quite compile what I had, it seemed to have lost any idea of what an EDMA package is in the project properties RTSC tab, said I should install at least one of these things. There is no installer for the edma I am using so I (re)installed a couple of old edma packages, these still did not show up as edma packages.

    Unchecking the edma package let me build and then launch my debugger.

    So after all that I have slightly different config files and no more ROV/profile etc.

    Add to that it has broken cfg file reading, now it just says "Building configuro package" forever - or at least until the memory is exhausted.

    I gave it 2 GB ram and it staill fails.

    I created a new workspace and imported the project - still fails.

    Commically the profile menu has come back - shame profiling is not an option on the C6000 chips!

    - would you please send the contents of your installjammer registry directory (usually under program files or program files(x86))

    I had to wipe that folder to get CCS to install cleanly, but I dd zip it and send it earlier.

    I am on vacation next week so beta experiments will have to wait until after that.

    Hi Lisa,

    I went on vacation for 2 weeks, since I came back things have been a little better. I went 9 days without a blue-screen, the best ever for this setup (I suspect the pod for the BSODs).

    The rebuild all had also stopped, but once I touched the cfg file they came back, I touched the file and the package folder back to the day before which did not help, but the next day the rebuild all's went away again until I touched the cfg file again. I build the release off the same files but from a mak file in a cygwin session, it does not seem to have the rebuild all issue so I guess itis something eclipse is doing.

    Right now I will live with the rebuilds I need to get on with work.

    I must be a glutton for punishment - I had a go at v5.4 (from 5.2 0.69).

    I tried web update, clean install and parallel install.

    In all cases I ended up with a broken indexer, failure in the persistent state restore (hence empty project) and inability to open text files.

    It seems to be getting worse.

    Hi Chris, 

    I am sorry for the upgrade pain that you are going through. I am guessing that you are using the same workspace in your attempts to get things to work. Workspace in eclipse, which CCS is based on, are a bit more complicated than in other tools. They contain projects as well as all runtime generated settings and configuration. The best parallel that I can think of is kind of like registry for Windows OS. My guess is that there is some metadata stored in workspace that is causing problems for newer version of CCS. We were able to make some fixes in the past, but we would need workspace and projects. I am not sure if that is an option at all. In most cases it is not. 

    The one suggestion that I can offer is to try a new workspace directory(File->Switch workspace) and import your projects into this new workspace. We have a bit more control over project format and we have been trying to ensure that older projects can be imported into newer versions of CCS. If you are using a source control system, then I would suggest starting from known working version of projects. During import project files are often updated to newer version format. I am concerned that project files might be in a state where most migration steps have taken place, but not all of them due to these other exceptions that you are seeing.

    I tried a new workspace and imported a working v5.2 workspace, I got the indexer error, once dismissed I got a message saying there where things I would have to fix, the details just said java null pointer.

    End result was the same.

    Hi Chris, 

    There is no option to import a workspace. You can import projects (Project->Import Existing CCS Eclipse Project menu) or there is File->Switch Workspace, which ends up opening an existing workspace. Could you clarify which menu items you used?

    Hi Chris,

    Your .cproject file has a small unexpected serialization issue which causes that NullPointerException during project loading.  I'm attaching a fixed version of the file (renamed to bypass attachment filtering).  All I did was add the missing 'parallelizationNumber="8"' attribute into the first <builder> element.  I don't know what caused this attribute to fail to be serialized into the .cproject file.  It could be just a legacy project corner case.  I will keep an eye for this in the future.

    That is much improved, I aim to bring the other elements up to data (bios, xdc etc)

    First query for that though is that it seems not to recognise I have any edma packages installed, it is just a container file that I extract into the ti folder, how do I make CCS notice it?

    Hi Chris,

    CCS should discover new products every time you start CCS up.  Or you could also force it to go through the discovery by clicking the "Refresh" button on the Preferences > CCS > RTSC > Products page.

    If that doesn't work for you, could you attach a screenshot of your ti folder, with the edma directory expanded a few levels in?

    Hi Baltasar,

    Even with refreshes it is oblivious of all the versions of EDMA it should be able to find (previous versions had found them all).

    To keep working I just added the edma path manually in the RTSC tab, is there any drawback doing it that way?

    Hi Chris,

    Can you attach a screenshot of your Preferences > CCS > RTSC > Products page?  

    Some legacy RTSC products cannot be installed unless you have at least one version of XDCtools registered with CCS.

    I have a seed-xds560plus usb emulator, installing that was a real struggle, lots and lot and lots of BSOD's, I don't want to disturb it ever.
