General questions SITARA and J-Link, IAR, and CCSv5.x

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM3358

Hello team,

Can you provide an update on where we are writh AM335x + J-Link support?  This link, http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/J-Link_Emulator_Support, shows Sitara support is pending but then in the notes says you can download the SW/Drivers to use with CCSv5.

http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/J-Link_Emulator_Support, this link shows Sitara as TBD but then has notes that Beta is available.

1. what is status of using J-Link + CCSv5.x for Sitara?
2. what J-Link emulator is needed?
3. How do we (TI'ers in the field) get emulators? do we have to purchase them?
4. Can i use CCSv5 + J-Link to run the AM335x DDR Write Leveling utility?

IAR questions:
5. I have workbench installed but - do i need J-Link emulator for it to work or can i use XDS100?  or other?
6. Has anyone successfully setup IAR + Emulator and talked to AM335x?

If anyone has time for call and/or Webex i'm sure my team would be interested in getting an update on IAR, J-Link as related to Sitara devices

  • Marc,

Coincidentally I tested today my J-link on a AM3358 board here and it connected just fine. I could load some software to the board and the only thing I had to work out was the adapter arrangement.

I basically am using a Segger J-link emulator, a Segger TI 14-pin adapter and a 14-20 pin cTI adapter (check the attached picture). You can also use a TMDSADPEMU-20T (check this page) or directly a Segger's TI 20-CTI adapter.

    Answering your questions:

    1. It works as of today on my CCSv5.2.1. I would consider it beta, as it is not thoroughly tested yet.

    2. I am using the $299 Segger J-link. I am not sure if the upscale models (PLUS, ULTRA, ULTRA+ and PRO) or the educational model (EDU) work as well. Keep in mind that there is a boatload of poorly designed J-link clones that may cause a lot of headache - stick with the original product.

    3. Yes.

    4. Never used this utility. Is this standalone or is it part of CCS? If standalone, chances are it will not work.

    5. I tested the BeagleBone XDS100 on AM335x devices and it works with IAR.

    6. When I tested this combination I used the XDS100 embedded into the BeagleBone. I think that a standard J-link should work as well, as the AM335x is a Cortex-A device.

    Hope this helps,

    Rafael

  • Hi Marc,

Here are my responses to the CCS related questions:

    1. what is status of using J-Link + CCSv5.x for Sitara?

As of right now only the Am335x Starter kit JLink support is available, the rest of the Sitara devices are still not reliably supported. That's why it is still listed as TBD. I will update the wiki to make it clearer. To provide support for a particular board, some very board/device specific work is needed so the availability on this is pretty much demand driven at the moment. Currently there is only Windows support, Linux support is coming soon.

    2. what J-Link emulator is needed?

Any JLink emulator pod but only USB connection is supported at the moment.

    3. How do we (TI'ers in the field) get emulators? do we have to purchase them?

    I believe you do.

    4.Can i use CCSv5 + J-Link to run the AM335x DDR Write Leveling utility?

I haven't tried it but according to the wiki it appears to involve running an out file on the target. If that is all that's needed, it should work. The ARM advance feature doesn't work at this stage.

    Regards,

    Victor
