emulation header question, TI 60-pin or MIPI 60-pin, which to use?

Hi,

We're trying to decide which emulation header to place on a new multi-core Keystone board design, the TI 60-pin header or the MIPI 60-pin header.

In addition to ordering some new XDS560V2 emulators, we have a bunch of older XDS510 emulators laying around that we'd still like to use for basic JTAG debug. I looked at the wiki page http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/JTAG_Adapters and it lists available adaptors but all of the ones that adapt to a 60-pin MIPI header on the board are tagged as 'Roadmap'. This would indicate that we should probably put a TI 60-pin header on our board and if we did, there's a TMDSADP1460 adaptor available that would let us use our existing XDS510 JTAG emulators with it.

However, I was reading spru655i.pdf and there is a foot note for table 1 that reads "Note that the XDS560T has been discontinued, and the TI-60 pin header required by the XDS560T is no longer recommended for new designs." If I read this correctly, it's telling me not to use the TI 60-pin header on my board. But then further down in spru655i in table 3, every adaptor listed is for a TI header on the target board including TI 60 pin which kind of tells me that maybe we should use the TI 60-pin. Finally, the EVMs I've looked at including a couple of the TCI66xx multi-core EVMs all have the TI 60-pin. Just about everything points me to the TI 60-pin except the one foot note in spru655i.pdf. Could somebody from the emulation team help clarify this point.

Thanks

  • Brad,

I updated the JTAG Adapters page to reflect the current status of adapters and also encompass the adapters bundled with each emulator.

Regarding the MIPI versus TI 60 pin connectors, it is a matter of balancing compatibility versus expandability and future roadmap. Currently the TI-60 has a broader offering of adapters and supported emulators, while the MIPI-60 is natively supported only by the XDS560v2 and the upcoming XDS Pro Trace emulator (that replaces the XDS560T). However, the MIPI-60 has room for additional EMU signals and their implementation is in the roadmap.

Therefore, since you are interested in using existing XDS510 emulators, then either put the TI-60 and buy a suitable adapter or put the MIPI-60 and build your own (carefully inspect SPRU655 to accomplish that).

    Hope this helps,

    Rafael
