Error connecting to the target: Unknown device

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430FG4618

Hi

I am facing a problem with my experimenter's board MSP-EXP430FG4618.

When I debug the kit using MSP-FET430UIF USB debug interface i am getting this error

Please help me solve this problem.

Regards,

Murughendra

ps:

I am using Windows 7, CC studio v5, and my device is getting identified in COM port properly.

I feel the problem is not with the debug interface or my computer because I can debug another kit on my computer using the same debugger.

  • Hi Murughendra,

can you provide more details?  How is your target setup in CCS? What is your ccxml file setup?   External to CCS?   Did CCS ask to update the FET?  Can you connect to the board with Elprotronics free flash software?  (www.elprotronic.com)?  What board can you connect to?  Have you double checked the jumpers on the experiment board and are you using the correct JTAG plug?  The FG4618 board has two JTAG connectors and two different msps you can program.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Hi Lisa,

Thanks a lot for your reply.

Once I accidently loaded a code into my MSP430FG4618 that was written for another MSP family, I hope that's not creating problems.(And it has not gone into something called eternal reset state)

No CCS did not ask me for any updates.

I have two kits of MSPEXP430FG4618, Using the same computer and using same debugger I can load to my another kit. And I can debug my FRAM boards also.

JTAG connections and jumpers on the kit are correct and still I am getting problem.

  • Hi Murughendra,

ok, it seems to me either you do need a full erase of the non working experiementer board or else it is or has become defective/broken.  The fact your FET works and another experiementer board works seems to indicate something specific to that experimenter board.  This verifies both the FET and software.

I would do the following two steps

    - load a hex file onto the problematic board using the elprotronic flash programming tool (free)  (www.elprotronic.com) and see if that helps/test if you can read and write to the chip using this tool.  Note spy-bi-wire vs JTAG must be manually selected in this case.

    - if the above fails, I would debug the hardware as this starts pointing to a defective board/chip or something different with the hardward.  Double check voltages, jumpers, signals etc.

    Please keep us informed.

  • Hi Murughendra,

just thought I would check for an update with your enquiry.
