Which version of CCS to install

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MSP430WARE

Hi,

I've recently acquired a launchpad MSP430 and launchpad Stellaris. I note that CCS comes as a simple 5.3 version (and from my understanding this includes the MSP430ware with GUI). The MSP430ware is available separately but without GUI.

For the Stellaris there is a standalone Stellarisware package or the CCS with Stellarisware.

The computer I plan to install the software on is a little ancient and when I install the CCS5.3 it felt as thought it took forever (at least an 1 hour). So to avoid another long install, can I just install the standalone stellarisware on the PC having the CCS5.3 and have both the Stellarisware and MSP430ware available on the same CCS package?

After installing CCS5.3 I noted that there are 4 licence options, the last being "code limited (MSP430)" and the penultimate is "free license". Will I see a "code limited (stellaris)" when I install the stellarisware? It would appear that I may be able to swap between these license options on the help menu? One last question: what is the difference between "free license" and "code limited"?

Thanks for the help.

Neil

  • Hi Neil,

    I hope the following clarifies

    - you can get Stellarisware separately from the ti site

    http://www.ti.com/lsds/ti/microcontroller/arm_stellaris/code_examples.page

    http://www.ti.com/tool/sw-lm3s

Please make sure you have the latest version and don't use the program files directory.  You can then use it in ccs.

Regarding licensing.   You can swtich between the two license types, you are correct.  This can be done by launching the license setup from help->code composer studio licensing information->upgrade tab.  Bascially the code size limited msp430 license is for the msp 430 only and limits the codes size you can use (object code size).  The free license is hardware limited for use with the xds100 and certain evm kits only.

Does this help clarify?  You can of course have an installation for each license type but this sounds like not a great option in your case.

    Best Regards,

    Lisa

  • Thanks Lisa.l

I'll install the standalone stellarisware and see how things go.

  • Hi Neil,

ok, let us know how it goes.   In the TI Resource explorer page you can get Stellarisware added there if not automatically, by scrolling down on the main page.  You should see an option to add/scan for further packages to add.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  •   Hi Lisa,

Thanks for the help. One last little question: I now only have "activate" as a license option. Is there a trick to reverting to the 4 options, or do I now wait for 30 days?

  • Hi Neil,

although ccs doesn't look for another license if you have already selected the trial license, once that expire you can go to

Help->Code Composer Studio Licensing Information ... the Upgrade tab I believe has the "launch license setup"

    Hope this helps.

    Best Regards,
