CCSv5.x Support for VMWARE

Hello,

I need to decouple my physical system from software/hardware interferences to get rid of all these installation nightmares!

With several of our commonly used  tools, I finally succeeded using virtual machínes (even tools using external eval-boards).

Unfortunately, CCSv5 and the low cost TI debug interfaces installed on most EVAL boards (Stellaris/MSP430) are very fragile and of poor performance when using a virtual machine. As far as I experienced this is also true for e.g. JLINK and ARM.

Two questions:

1) Are there any known settings in VMWARE that enable direct access to the computers USB interface (bypassing virtualization)?

2) Does TI recognize virtualization as an important technology that will be supported by their tools?

Best regards

Uwe C.

  • Uwe,

I will check with our System test team on the first question as they use VMWare pretty extensively in our lab for automated tests.  I know that they do have problems with some of the entry level products like those found on eval kits.  The higher performing products like XDS560v2 should work much better in this type of environment.  Alternatively we also have remote JTAG emulators.  There is Ethernet versions of XDS560v2 and also the more affordable XDS220 (this one is available from Spectrum Digital).  I will also check if we have used the USB XDS200 with VMWare.

    Regards,

    John

  • John,

using CCS with VMWARE would greatly stabilize our laboratory and avoid many frustrating experiences regarding drivers and/or troubles with the development infrastructure (e.g. http://e2e.ti.com/support/microcontrollers/msp430/f/166/p/253795/890300.aspx#890300).

    Best regards

  • Hello Uwe,

CCS normally behaves pretty well inside VMware. I have been playing around with CCSv5.3 in a VMware XP image and so far it seems pretty stable. I connected to a few MSP430 targets via the MSP430FET UIF and also using the onboard emulation on various starter kits.

What issues are yous seeing as a cause of running inside a VM? Connectivity issues?

    Thanks

    ki

  • Hello ki,

my perception is that the connection to the target is not reliable and if, the responsiviness is poor (download/debug).

All together, it forces me to use CCS on a physical machine ... with all the problems regarding shared drivers/ressources.

By the way: do you know how to bypass USB virtualization. Did you ever use it to improve responsiviness?

    Best regards

      Uwe C.

  • I never had reliability issues, though I always chalked up poor performance being due to the fact that I am running inside a VM.

I've never tried it myself. That question is best asked to the folks at VMware
