Windows or Linux operating system choice

Hi forum for TI C/C++ Compiler questions:

Per the link:  http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Download_CCS

What is referred to as a Desktop Linux PC?   Is a Desktop Linux PC installed with a Linux OS instead of a Windows OS?/I want to install a C/C++ Compiler on my laptop, and do not have yet a server, i.e., Dell 310 or 810.

To get started now, should I install the Windows or Linux Code

Q:  INnorder to install the linux OS onto my laptop, can I install a virtualization software on my laptop that will allow installation of the Linux download?  Or can I safely install the Linux on my laptop Windows 7 without virtualization?  If so, which specific directory on my laptop should the Linux be installed?

Also I saw 2 Compiler pdf files  1) ARM Optimizing C and C++ Compiler ver 5.0.  And 2) TMS320C6000 Optimizing Compiler ver 7.4 (per user guide).  I looked at this compiler since it mentions the Advantech DSPC-8682 PCI- express board for development.  Q:  Which compiler should be used for the Advantech development, which requires Linux?

Thanks,

Corby
