Way to Run Code Composer Studio from USB Dongle?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CCSTUDIO

Is it possible run code composer studio standalone from a USB dongle?  Some IT policies are extremely strict and prevent engineers from installing any IDE tools (not just CCS).  1 possible way around this may be to have a standalone version running from a dongle.  I would like to know is there any plan to support CCS in this manner?

  • Hi Marc,

let me try this and let you know how it goes.   I don't see why it should not be possible.  Two things to note

    - you will need to be able to license ccs (ie access to the license file or server)

    - ccs will need to be able to have read/write access to where your workspaces and projects are.

I will get back to you as soon as I have had a chance to try.   This is not a common scenario but an interesting question.

  • Hi Lisa,

I think those stipulations are reasonable since they can still copy files from a USB dongle to the main drive.  Therefore R/W access to the drive for projects and accessing the license file should be OK.

I look forward to hearing back from you on the tests.

  • Hi Marc,

yeah, I don't see why it shouldn't work but I am still trying to track down a large enough usb stick to try so I can verify for you  ..... sorry about that.  I didn't realise the one I have is too small.

  • If you skip the installation step, there will be a handful of features that won't work as expected. There will also be an issue if the install path is different than the path you run from (IE, you install to C:\ti, copy it to E:\ti and try to run from there).

Here's what you'll need to worry about:

    • no drivers will be installed. This may or may not be a problem depending on your target device (or simulator)
    • There are some files created in the user's home folder used for the Welcome page / Resource Explorer. These will be missing so resource explorer won't work.
    • If the run location is different than the install location, you'll have to fix up the path in ccsv5\eclipse\plugins\com.ti.ccstudio.base_5.x.0.00xxx\properties
    • There is also a hard coded path in ccsv5\eclipse\ccstudio.ini, but it's not critical
The list may not be complete. It's just what comes to mind.
  • Hi Lisa,

This is all good information but I would like a tested & verified procedure from the factory.  Have you had a chance to try this out on the USB dongle?

    Marc

  • Hi Marc,

I agree with Andy this is not wise.  I tracked down a dongle and made an attempt yesterday which crashed and I had to recover the dongle.  So I think this is a sign it is not the easiest or wisest.  Next chance I get I will try one further time and if there is any update/tips/tricks I will let you know.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • By the way ... I tried with a brand new 32GB dongle.
