Run, step over, halt buttons do not show up in Debug

Hi,

I am using a TI MSP430-FETUIF to program an MSP430 FR5969.  I have version 5.4.0.00091, and I ran an update (which might have had an error?) after I ran into this problem the first time.

My code appears to compile and load just fine- I am using a lightly modified example CCS project and when I press the green bug button, I get the "Build Finished" message, and Configuring Debugger, Erasing Memory, and Loading Program screens.   The message in the console is "MSP430: Loading complete. Code Size - Text: 1382 bytes Data: 4 bytes."

When this is done, I can see the green bug still, but no run, halt, step over, step into buttons appear at the top.

When I press the green bug again, I receive a message about needing to terminate my debug session to start a new one, so I know that I am entering debug mode.

Does anyone know why I might not be getting my debug buttons?   Do I have a setting wrong?   I also noticed that when I clicked View>Other>Application View, it said "Could not create the view: An unexpected exception was thrown"

Thank you in advance for any help!  Below is a screenshot of my screen with the non-buttons and terminate debug message.
