Platinum and Microcontroller Editions Side by Side Install?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC-DEBUGGER

Hello,

I was wondering if there are any issues having both types of CCSV4 on my machine.

I recently loaded the TMDSCCS-HWN01A version on my PC for the ezDsp stick, but now I need to go back to using my MSP-EXP430F5438 eval. board and the Microcontroller edition.

Thanks,

Dominic

  • Hi Domenic,

you can use both editions on one PC but you need to install them in different directories. So, simply change the default installation path of your second installation.

Take care with the desktop shortcuts and rename them to distinguish the two versions.

  • I'm sorry to interrupt this thread, but I had the same question and also another whose answer is implied here, but which I'd like to confirm.

I see that you *can* use TMDSCCS-HWN01 platinum edition (presumably with the free limited license option in these cases) on the same PC as the CCS 4.x Microcontroller editions as distinct installations.  I presume that the suggestion to install both but use them in distinct directories is wholly satisfactory with respect to both of the products properly getting automatic / manual updates & patches installed, et. al.

I infer that the reason WHY you'd want / need to have the microcontroller edition co-installed with the free limited license platinum version of CCS 4.x is that the latter version may not actually support the MSP-FET430UIF programmer/debugger unit for the MSP430s nor the CC-DEBUGGER for the CC derived parts; is this correct?

I would have guessed they would have supported those units (just like the XDS100) since they're also very much in the category of low cost entry level programmer devices (really even less capable / flexible than XDS100), and AFAICT XDS100 based programming is not supported for MSP430 or CC5xxxx / CC6xxx / CC2xxx devices.  I suppose not given the existence of this thread.  Actually I'm surprised the MSP-FET430UIF and CC-DEBUGGER aren't (yet?) able to be replaced by the XDS100v2 in conjunction with CCS 4.x, since I would assume the hardware to generate the JTAG / SpyBiWire / etc. serial bit streams can't really have such unique requirements between the MSP430, C2000, CCxxxx, true JTAG, and SpyByWire.

So I'm guessing with respect to code development / compiling for MSP430, CC5137, CC6137, the Platinum limited version should work equivalently to the Microcontroller version as the former should be a super set of the other, but for actual debugging and program uploading, you'd need to use the distinct MCU version because its capabilities in those areas are a subset of the limited Pt version?

If so, it seems odd that they wouldn't just sell a MCU version license that is equivalent to the full MCU version but which also includes all the capabilities of the platinum limited XDS100 version, thus simplifying the co-installation and distinct licensing issues.

Anyway I'll look into doing co-installations if that is what is required since at the moment microcontroller work is my key concern, but it is useful to have the other version around to experiment with other devices for future use consideration.

    Thanks in advance!
