Purchasing CCS v5, would v6 upgrade be free?

Hi,

We are planning to purchase the CCS v5 (current version). We would like to understand the following:

1. What are the most important differences between the free (option given at install) vs. paid versions, except for support for more emulators?

2. Would we be able to upgrade to CCS v6 when it comes out?

Regards,

Anup

  • Hi,

All the info about licensing can be found here: http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Licensing_-_CCS

    2. Would we be able to upgrade to CCS v6 when it comes out?

As CCS v6 is still in Beta version, you won't be able to find this answer. Any of my TI  buddy can surely shed some light on this query.

  • When you purchase CCS it comes with 1 year of subscription.  Subscription entitles you to any major upgrades that come out.  So yes if you were to purchase CCSv5 today you would get CCSv6 for free as it would come out during your subscription period.

The free licenses are limited in some way.  For MSP430 it is limited by code size (16KB) for the other device families the type of debug probe that you can use is restricted.  You can use the low end an onboard debug probes but when you want to move up to something with better performance then you need a full CCS license.  The idea is that you can start evaluation and development cheaply with a low cost probe and free license and then once you are sure it is the right choice you can move up to the professional tools.
