Problems launching debug session CCS4

In some instances, the javaw.exe process can be killed after unplugging the USB emulator, however this does not seem to work in all cases. At this time the solution in those cases appears to be a reboot of the PC.

If you are able to isolate a sequence of events or settings that can trigger and reproduce this lock up, we would be interested to hear that.

thanks for the suggestion.  Unplugging the FET module did not  help.  I also tried PSTools to kill javaw.exe with no success.

I changed the project's target processor at one point after the project had been created, could that have anything to do with this?

Changing the target processor of the project shouldn't normally result in a lock up, however there is apparently something that causes the driver to lock up in some instances that it is not able to recover from. If you see this lock up again it will be very helpful if you could send us the steps that led to it.

If I come up with anything I'll definitely let you know.  It seems completely random so I'm wondering if it can be related to the state of the processor during the debug connection, i.e. in an interrupt, etc.  I'm well beyond my knowledge comfort zone here so obviously that's just a guess.

Did you try cleaning the workspace?

No I'm still having this problem intermittently and always have to reboot to get up and going again.  Still no pattern developing on this end.  I haven't tried cleaning the workspace, I'll give that a shot.  Though if that were the problem I would expect more consistency to the behavior.

I've filed SDSCM00034753 so that we log more information when the launch becomes unresponsive after two or more minutes.

That's great news!  I'm glad to hear this issue hasn't gone completely cold, it's super frustrating.  Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

I know that this is an intermittent problem, but if you manage to reproduce the problem consistently, let us know.

MSP430F4783

I am having the same problem and it started with CCS V3.1 and now with V4.   The device I am working with is the MSP430F248.  There does not seem to be a pattern and the only way to fix the problem is to restart the PC.

my customer has the same problem. He uses the CCS 4.0.2.01003 and MSP430F5438 (on the experimenter board).

After starting the debugger the following error message pops up:
"Error connecting to the target: No MSP430 device was found on USB FET 1"

After pressing a couple of time the button "Retry", then it works. Number of pressing the button is between 3 and 10 (sometimes it works at once).

Why does it happen?

I too see both of these issues. If I wait long enough, CCS sometimes launches the debug session. If I'm lucky enough for that to happen, then I have to click retry over and over again as it gives me the message "Error connecting to the target: No MSP430 device was found on USB FET 1" until it eventually it will connect.

I'm using CCS 4.1.1.00014 and the MSP-EXP430F5438.

Any Ideas on how to fix this?

can you check which USB driver version you are using? Check that you will have the newest one.

If I check the windows device manager I see "MSP-FET430UIF - VCP" listed under the Ports (COM & LPT) category. The driver version for this device is 6.5.9017.0. If I click Update Driver... windows searches for a moment and returns with "The Wizard could not find a better match for your hardware than the software you currently have installed". Typically this means everything is up to date for that device. Is 6.5.9017.0 the latest version? It's dated as 10/20/2009, which is fairly recent.

I would be happy just to open the User Experience example with CCS v4.0.1 - can you advise on how to do this?   I'm following the procedure in slau263d but it seems like the procedure was written with an older ccs based on what I see in the workspace dialog.

I'm using File->Import and trying various options from 'General' to 'CCS' and the sub options underneath.

I have built a 'hello world' and loaded that successfully to the MSP43oF5438 and have run the nifty command line tool via program.bat to update the TIUSB eeprom all with success.

I wasn't clear - the problem with I import, is I don't see any projects to import in the list.

Most likely a project with the same name is already opened in the workspace. CCS(i.e. eclipse) does not allow to open the same project twice, even if it exists in a different location on the filesystem. Current behaviour is not very friendly (i.e. it appears that there is not project found). Newer versions of eclipse handle it a bit better, they show discovered project, but it is greyed out to indicate that it can not be imported.
