How to defeat default line numbering when editing 'C' files?

Upon opening a 'C' file, there are line numbers in the left gutter. You can make these go away with a Right-Click, but how do you stop them appearing the first place? Cancelling the 'line numbers' checkbox in General->Editors doesn't have any effect.

    Steven,

    Unfortunately you have hit an Eclipse 3.2 bug that we inherited in our tools (CCE and CCSv4); we submitted internally a request for a fix (SDSCM00032254) and these things usually are fixed in a (not so distant) future release. A recommendation is to always keep your tools up-to-date, ok?
