CCS6 needs the install DVD

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CCSTUDIO, CONTROLSUITE, TMS320F28335

Hi,

After every lunch of CCS6 it warns me that the install DVD is not found in my DVD drive. I can not get rid from this message unless I insert the DVD into the drive. What’s wrong?

Thanks,

  • Hi,

this is certainly a strange one. What host OS are you using? And how did you install CCS?

Can you provide all the install logs? They should be in:

<INSTALL DIR>\ccsv6\install_logs_<timestamp> (there will be several subfolders).

    Thanks

    ki

  • Hi Ki,

Windows 81., 64-bit. From the DVD I installed from the DVD I got with the LCDKC6748 dev. kit.

    I attached the install logs.

    Thanks for your help.0654.ccs6_install_logs.zip

    Best regards,

  • The logs look good...

Can you try using a a new clean workspace folder and see if that helps at all? If not, can you attach your ccstudio.ini and eclipse.ini files in <INSTALL DIR>\ccsv6\eclipse?

    Thanks

    ki

  • Hi Ki,
Thanks for the suggestion and the reply.

Creating the new workspace was the first think I tried. It did not help. Sorry,

Here are my ini files 0211.ccs6_eclipse_ini_files.zip you asked for.
    Thanks for your help!!!
    Louis

  • hmm... those files look fine too.

There must be some process that is referencing the DVD drive....

If you do not mind, could you do a search inside the root ccs directory and such all files and folders/subfolders for any references to your DVD drive (E:\)?

  • Hi ki,

Thanks for the suggestions. Well, yes, there are many occurrences of „C:\E” in JAR, XML files.

However it seems the problem has been solved. We are thinking to switch from the extremely complicated (but very nice) C7648 CPU to TMS320F2837xD MCU. I needed more information about the F28377D Delfino Experimenter Kit but it was available only in the “controlSuite” software. So I downloaded and installed the “controlSuite” software. It looks like the installation of the “controlSuite” solved the problem. If I start the CCS6 then – at this moment – it does not complain about the missing CCS6 DVD. Who understands this?

Anyway, it looks like the problem is solved. Thanks for your excellent ideas.

    Best regards,
    Louis
PS: If the issue would come back then I will inform you in this topic.

  • Good to hear the problem went away.... for now. I'd still like to get to the bottom of the root issue though. I suspect that there is some reference\paths to last package installed and since you downloaded and installed controlSUITE from your hard drive, the reference to the DVD drive is gone. Strange. Please let me know if this problem appears again.

    Thanks

    ki

  • Hi,

Well, I have a problem. It is not related with the DVD but it looks like it is a side effect of installing controlSUITE.

I did not notice it yesterday, but – probably after installing the controlSUITE - my license changed from “Full License” to “Free License” in the bottom right corner of the CCS6 status bar. I checked my license in License Information View dialog and I found 4 license entries:

    1.    This points to folder only: C:\ti\ccs6\ccs_base\DebugServer\..\license
    2.    This points to folder only: C:\ti\license
    3.    This is the real license file (full path + what I added to the window 2 months ago.
    4.    This entry is new I think: it points to a license file:
    C:\Users\[MY_USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Texas Instruments\CSS\ti\0\CSS_Free_License.lic

So can you tell me what is wrong?

    Thanks,
    Louis

    I have noticed that:

    - Under some conditions CCS6 decides to create a free license even when you already have a full license

    - The CCS6 status bar can sometimes show a Free or Full license when both are in the list of licenses.

    E.g. the following sequence:

    1) Start CCS6 and the status bar reports "Full License".

    2) Start a debugging session for a Tiva Launchpad, using the on-board Stellaris In-Circuit Debug Interface connection and the status bar changes to "Free License".

[The Stellaris In-Circuit Debug interface can be used with a Free License]

    3) Start a debugging session for a TMS320F28335 using a BlackHawk USB2000 connection and the status bar changes to "Full License".

[The USB2000 connection requires a Full License]

When the CCS6 status bar reports a "Free License" does it prevent you from using a feature which requires a Full License?

i.e. is it a real licensing problem, or is the CCS6 status bar just displaying the wrong type of license?

I also found that that it is possible to manually remove the free license from the License Location list which forces CCS6 to display a Full License - but that under some conditions (e.g. install a software update?) that the free license gets added again.

  • Hi Chester,
Thanks for the info. That means that I am not the only one who has this issue. But the situation is getting worse and worse: my CCS6 currently show “Unlicensed”. If I restart CCS6 then I will get “Free License”. I have never seen “Full License” after installing “controlSUITE”.

Have you tried adding the full license file to the list of license files after installing controlSUITE?

There was a problem in CCS 6.0 where CCS 6.0.0.00190 forgets license file location after an update

[The problem of CCS forgetting the license file location is reported to be fixed in CCS 6.1]

I did also have a problem where on one Linux machine the CCS6 status bar and License Information Status view were both reporting "Unlicensed" even though I was able to perform actions which required a full license - see CCSv6 6.0.1.00039 Linux doesn't recognize flexlm hostid correctly. Not sure if the same problem could occur under Windows.

  • Hi Chester,
Thanks but my error message is different. The problem is not the MAC address as far as I understand the error message itself…This happens when I get the unlicensed in the status bar:

    Thanks,

    Louis

PS: Yes I created the C:\ti\license folder and added my license file from there. I did not help.

Based upon that error I assume you are using a floating license - whereas my error about the MAC address was using a node locked license.

A forum search for license server problems suggest that maybe restarting the licensing service will fix the problem - see http://e2e.ti.com/support/development_tools/code_composer_studio/f/81/p/350395/1228698.aspx#1228698

[I have no experience of using a floating license, so can't give any specific advice on how to debug the problem]

  • Yes, origianlly I had a license server installed but I had many issues with it so I uninstalled the whole FlexNet stuff and used the *.LIC file as a node-licked license. It was a month ago and it seemed to work fine...

Anyway, I do not need the floating license server. How can I convert the LIC file for node-locked license? Should I give the license file back to TI and ask for a new one?

    Thanks,

    Louis

If you go to Help -> Code Composer Studio Licensing Information -> Update -> Launch License Setup -> Activate and "Specify a License File" and point at your license file, does that fix the problem?

Based upon your description, I was wondering if CCS has somehow reverted to trying to connect to a license server rather than use the node locked license file.

Not sure, based upon the licensing FAQ at https://www.ti.com/general/docs/staticcontent.tsp?contentId=49039 suggest you email license_file_help@list.ti.com for further assistance.

  • Hi Chester,

Yes, I tried that 100 times. It did not help. I agree, the best will be to ask the TI guys via E-mail.

    Many thanks for your help!

    Best regards,

    Louis
