Debug functions working or not with floating license away from server

Hello Fellow Programmers,

I am now in need of a license for my ccsv5 and I am trying to figure out which license is the best one for me and the company I work for.

I am curious about the floating license. I have seen in the wiki the following:

'If you are configured to check out a license from a license server and you take your computer off the network, CCS will continue to function with no limitation. Note that it will indicate in the title bar that it is currently unlicensed since it was unable to get a license from the server, but otherwise functionality will not be limited. It is not using up a floating license when operating this way."

I am confused, as I thought I could not use my JTAG if Code Composer is not licensed. Are there really no limitations?

I  have to go customers' sites, and using JTAG (XDS510LC in my case) is sometimes needed; I cannot remotely access the server that would be holding my floating license.

So in a nutshell: can I use JTAG if I don't have access to my floating license present on my office's server?

Thank you all in advance for your help!

Yes, you need a full license (node-locked or floating) to use an external JTAG emulator besides XDS100. An XDS510LC needs a full license. However we also recognize that you may not always have access to your network where the license is hosted. We don't want the lack of license access to be a limitation so CCS will remember that it was able to obtain a license from the license server in the past and allow you to continue to use CCS while you are off the network with no limitation at all.

YES (as long as CCS was able to access the license in the past).

    Thanks

  • Hello Ki,

Thank you very much for this clarification.

You might want to suggest to whomever is in charge of the wiki to update it and clarify that.

    Happy Holidays!

  • Hello Ki,

I now purchased, received and installed the floating license (our IT department did).
    I am running CCSv5.
I can get the license and run my JTAG.
However, it does not seem to "remember" I have a license. I tried it two different ways:
    - running CCS, launching debugging and getting the license, stop bebugging, remove network connection, relaunch debug => fails
    - running CCS, launching debugging and getting the license, stop bebugging, closing CCS, remove network connection, re-run CCS => fails to find license and sends me online to get a free license.

Does that mean that I need to upgrade to CCSv6? Or is there maybe something else I need to set up?

Thank you in advance for your help.

    CORRECTION:

I believe I fixed the problem by removing the file paths to the original free licenses under Code Composer Studio Licensing Information / Manage.

It now has no issue starting and debugging without connection to my server.

Thank you again for all your help Ki.
