For DSP processors, we have C6000 code generation tools as a compiler tool.
You would get once you installed CCS IDE, also you can build code only through TI's CCS IDE.

"GCC" is for ARM architecture whereas DSP uses the CGT (code generation tools) from TI.

Is it possible to use openocd / jtagkey for debugging (something similar I use for ARM-s: gcc, gdb, openocd, jtagkey)... And if no, any other alternative?

I'm not sure, you have to get the configuration file from "openocd" "lauterbach" and "jtagkey" website and we don't have any support for that debuggers.

If I understood you correctly, gcc is not capable of compiling for C67x+? -march=name has 'c67x+' key specified but if you say its not supported I have to believe you. Or maybe gcc is just too inefficient which renders it useless for this core?

In case you have your own compiler, 'CGT' as you refer, is it possible to take it 'out' from the code composer studio (or download it separately) and use it within another eclipse setup (just like people do with gcc). Or do I really have to install the entire code composer studio?

I think, you can use this DSP tool "cl6x" from the following location to build code.

C:\ti\ccsv5\tools\compiler\c6000_7.4.4\bin

So I need bare-metal compiler and don't want to install codesourcery. Does gcc support that core and does anybody have link for precompiled gcc or build script for bare metal?

And what about the code speed/size comparing TI compiler and gcc?

I think all of your questions are answered at http://www.linux-c6x.org/ , or the resources it references.  This forum supports the compilers released directly by TI.  This gcc compiler for C6000 is not among them.

We've been using the C6727 for a few years. It's good to see that there is now a space based version of the part!

GCC is only supported for building Linux kernels and not for creating user programs.  Most people use Code Composer Studio from TI and the TI compiler.

Openocd does not support debugging this chip and neither does jtagkey.  We use the Blackhawk USB560 JTAG emulator: http://store.blackhawk-dsp.com/12202.html.  Not that many of the several different JTAG emulators made by and for TI processors work with the C6727, but this one does fine.

One thing I don't understand really. Whats the difference in compiling for linux kernels and for bare metal? I understand if there is not pre-build package available, but basically the core is supported by gcc (linux version should generate the machine code also, isn't it)? I mean if I compile it with newlib (similar to bare metal arm compilers) I should be able to compile for bare metal C6727?

I checked the TI website and most of the debug dongles do not support this core? Like XDS100, 200? I mean low cost versions. My project involves installing the compiler and debug environment in many computers (students) and 1K for dongle is a bit expensive, I must say...

In case I go for the code composer studio, this one has to be purchased also? No free version (like only supported in forums) available?
