Function profiler with C64x+ Simulator

Hi,

I am working on getting an application optimized for DM6437 platform. After performing various optimizations using CCSv5 and C6000 CGT version 7.0.4 I was able to get decent performance on this board. I am using on-board USB emulator and do not have a external JTAG emulator. One thing I wanted to evaluate is the Cache usage so that the performance is optimal. I looked into the following wiki

and C6000 C/C++ optimizing compiler user's guide and am very interested in being able to do function profiling for this board. I realized that doing function profiling might not be supported for this board, hence trying to do it with "C64+ Megamodule Cycle Accurate Simulator" target configuration. Every time I follow the steps in the wiki linked from above page, CCSv5 is freezing and unresponsive. What is the right set of steps to evaluate Cache usage and performance for this platform?

Hi Kal,
You will need a ProTrace emulator to do function profiling on your HW target. But you should be able to use a simulator. Note that there is a DM6437 cycle accurate simulator. That is a better option for you. Can you give it a try?

Thanks Ki, I tried with DM6437 simulator I am able to see the Cycle count for various functions. I am not able to figure out how to track L1P Cache events though, and when I click Properties in "Activities" tab of Profile Setup Window, the list of events is empty. It would be great if you can let me know how I can profile L1P Cache events using this simulator.

my screenshot may have been misleading. That dialog is when I selected "Properties..." button for "Profile all Functions for Total Cycles" in the Profile "Activities" tab. Can you show my your dialog?

What exact CCSv5 version are you using? You have an additional activity that I do not see in my CCSv5.5.0.00077 installation.

This is a very old version and not a well supported one. I strongly encourage you to uninstall that version and install CCSv5.5. You can get it from here:
