Is it ok to install 64-bit Eclipse with latest CCS 6.1?

Expert 1960 points

Hi, we are using the latest CCS 6.1 which was installed from the standard installer.  Apparently it has a 32-bit version of Eclipse running on 64-bit Windows 7. Recently we installed a new plug-in but could not get it to work. The plug-in tool vendor (Polyspace) claimed that it's due to 32-bit Eclipse, and suggested us to install 64-bit Eclipse. I've found a 64-bit version but wondering if it's ok to just install it on the top of the exiting CCS 6.1. Please advise. Thanks!

  • Hi Shef,
You can install a separate 64-bit Eclipse version in a separate directory and use it independent of CCS. You would basically have two separate Eclipse installations (the Eclipse that came with CCS and this new 64-bit Eclipse version)

You CAN NOT install Eclipse OVER your existing CCS installation with the hopes of updating CCS to a 64-bit Eclipse version. This will NOT work and you will simply break your CCS installation.

    Thanks

  • Hi Ki,
Thanks for the warning, which is loud and clear. If we install Eclipse 64bit in a separate folder, how to tell CCS to use the new 64-bit version instead of the original version? Or do we just have to use it separately outside of CCS (which is not what we want)?

You can't. CCS must use the 32-bit Eclipse version it comes with. The CCS plugins will not work with 64-bit Eclipse.

    Unfortunately, yes. Sorry.

Note that we are currently exploring the possibility of CCS support for 64-bit Eclipse in the future. We were curious what the demand for it is and your post certainly helps in regards to this.

    Thanks
