Virtual XP mode doesn't work w/ F28335 ezdsp

I am in the virtual xp mode in win 7 and have code composer 4.1.2 running.  I added a target and was able to find the ezdspF28335 under add new target.  Then I clicked on the debugger and it states "Error initializing emulator".  The buttons are cancel are retry.  The dialog box title is Spectrum Digital DSK-EVM-eZdsp onboard USB Emulator_0/C28xx.  I have the DSK powerred on and hooked up.  It seems like the virtual machine may not be seeing the hardware at all.   Any ideas?

  • Tim,

I haven't used virtual XP much but are you able to go into device manager and see if you have an SD emulation device listed?  I remember the one time I tried Virtual XP I had to edit the settings to get more of my ports and devices to show up.

  • Yes I can see it in device manager.  Exactly what settings are you talking about?

  • My virtual XP mode experience is very limited but I recall having to go to the top toolbar and explicitly enabling every USB device that I wanted to access from the Virtual XP host.  I would also try running the SDConfig utility to see if it is able to communicate with the emulator.

BTW is this Code Composer 4.1.2 or Code Composer Studio 4.1.2 that you are using?  Guess I am curious why you need to use the Virtual XP mode.  I run CCSv4.1.2 on my Win7 64bit machine.

  • You know that's a darn good question.  I was in he low power RF forum and they are saying code composer does not work on a 64 bit machine.  I thought they ment the new Eclipse base 4.x version.  If you go over there you will see a post from me.  The other issue when installing the new 4.x version a directory is named x86.  Usually this indicates an app for a 32 bit machine so I thought it would not work.  In the mean time I have installed it anyway and now I can see the DSK and it seems to be working.  Are you sure it is qualified to run on a 64 bit machine???

Email replies to this post may not be working which is why its taking me so long to realize you are replying.

  • CCSv4 is validated on 64bit and I run it on 64bit Win7 every day.  Personally I recommend installing somewhere other than program files as Vista and Win7 can be overly sensitive about apps writing to that folder during execution (if UAC is completely off and you have admin rights it will be fine).
