DRV8846 GUI

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8846, DRV8846EVM, INSTASPINUNIVERSALGUI

Did this ever get resolved? I am having a similar issue with the DRV8846_GUI. I can get to the point where I see the same image as JohnS with the "x's" on every icon,. After I connect my DRV8846EVM to my USB port the red x's remain, but my device shows up as the correct COM device number. I am seeing the blinking green "Status" LED on the dev board to indicate a USB connection.

I've installed the included FTDI driver using XP SP2 compatibility mode, and also tried the latest from FTDI (v2.12.00) using both compatibility mode as well as under Windows 7 mode. I am using GUI Composer Runtime CCS v6.1.1

-Joseph

  • Hi Joseph,

Would you please provide a screen capture of the DRV8846EVM_GUI once opened?
The blinking Status indicated the mcu is running. It does not indicate connection to the GUI. The lack of red x's indicates connections.

GUI Composer Runtime CCS v6.1.1 is the correct version.
  • Rick,

Attached is a screenshot of what I am seeing in the GUI per your request.

The device is recognized in my device manager and by the GUI, but the red "x" icons never go away. If it makes any difference, I do not have admin rights on my work laptop. I have taken this evm home and it worked just fine on my Windows 10 machine, so I know that the hardware is OK.

  • Hi Joseph,

Thanks for the screen shot. We will contact the GUI Composer group and get their input.
  • Hi Joseph,

Would you be able to run your GUI Composer with tracing enabled, as described here: http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/GUI_Composer/Tracing

Make sure you specify your application instead of “modem_m3” in when you run the command line.

Please attach the file "all.log" to this post and I’ll investigate further.

    Thanks

    Dobrin

  • Dobrin,

Attached is the all.log file that you requested.

    all.log

    -Joseph

  • Thank you, Joseph.

I need to enable tracing in another component. Can you generate that log file too?
When you start the command line you need to set two environment variables first and then run GUI Composer.
Please replace the <<…>> with your install and app as before in the commands bellow:

    cd <<GUI_COMPOSER_INSTALL_DIR>>\guicomposer\eclipse
    set TI_DS_ENABLE_LOGGING=1
    set TI_DS_LOGGING_OUTPUT=ds.log
    eclipsec.exe -debug traceAll.properties -vmargs -Dgc.webApp=<<YOUR_APP>> > all.log 2>&1

It will create one more file: “ds.log” in the “Eclipse” folder. Can you attach that one, too?

    Thanks
    Dobrin
  • Dobrin,

Attached is the ds.log that you requested.

  • Hi Joseph,

ds.log file has very little trace in it.

Can you see if you can run the simple program that comes by default with GUI Composer.
Just double click on <<YOUR_GUI_COMPOSER_INSTALL>>\guicomposer\webapps\modem_m3\ modem_m3_gc_app.exe
Does it have any issues? Do you see the sine wave?

    Thanks
    Dobrin
  • Dobrin,

Mine did not come with the modem_m3 webapp, only InstaSPIN_F2802xF_UNIVERSAL, InstaSPIN_F2805xM_UNIVERSAL, and InstaSPIN_F2806xM_UNIVERSAL. The download that I performed at home did come with the modem_m3 webapp. I used the link in the drv8846evm installation instructions to direct me to the GUI Composer download both at work and at home, and in both instances I downloaded the latest release (v6.1.1).

    -Joseph
  • Hi Joseph,
    I am puzzled now.

You are saying “both instances I downloaded the latest release (v6.1.1).”.But that install comes with “modem_m3”. It is a folder inside the “webapps” folder.
I installed it today from: processors.wiki.ti.com/.../Category:GUI_Composer to ensure my install matches yours and I have it.

Can you try installing it again in a different location?
Leave you current install the way it is. You can have multiple installs of GUI Composer. In the installer dialog just pick a different folder than the default one.
Go to the download site: processors.wiki.ti.com/.../Category:GUI_Composer and make sure you select version CCS 6.1.1 for Windows. It should be called GUI_Composer-6.1.1.0-Setup.exe
After installing it you should have “modem_m3” application in the “webapps” folder if the new installation. Let me know if you can run that app.
After that just copy “DRV8846EVM_GUIv1.0” from the old install’s “webapps” folder to the new install “webapps” folder. Let me know if that works?

    Regards
    Dobrin
  • Dobrin,

I re-downloaded the file from the link that you provided and performed a clean installation. It now works, and I have the modem_m3 app and not the other three that I mentioned before. I am a bit baffled as the link was still highlighted, indicating that I had clicked it before. I am not sure if it was a bad link, or much more likely me just downloading the wrong installation. Either way I am up and running and greatly appreciate all of the help that you have provided.

    -Joseph

  • Hi Joseph,

The issue could have been that GUI Composer cannot be over-installed: you cannot install the new version on top of the old version. Not sure.

What about the app “DRV8846EVM_GUIv1.0”? Did you try copying it from your old install to the new install and running it?

    Thanks

    Dobrin

  • Dobrin,

It's possible that the scenario you described is what happened. The new file that I downloaded from the link had a different name than the one I originally downloaded. The correct one is GUI_Composer-6.1.1.0-Setup, and the one that I had is named instaspinuniversalgui_v105. Like I mentioned before, I really don't know how the instaspin version was downloaded, but that appears to be what happened.

I copied over the drv8846evm GUI into the webapps folder just as before, only this time in the new, correct installation, and I am currently modifying settings and driving my stepper motor without issue. Thanks again for all of your help!
