Doubts in CCS6

It does more than that... it will terminate the whole debugger

'disconnect' will simply disconnect the JTAG connection between the debugger and the target. The debugger remains running however and can reconnect with the target. 'Terminate' will shut down the whole debugger. If you want to connect to the target again, the debugger has to be restarted first.

It means the debugger itself is running. This is different than the target execution state.

One more comment:

Your confusion is likely because you are used to the way CCSv3 worked. When you launched CCSv3, the debugger was launched with it. Hence, from the user's perspective, the debugger was "always running" with CCSv3. However, CCSv4 and greater works different. The IDE and the debugger has been decoupled where the CCS IDE is launched but not the debugger components of it. That is why there is an extra step of launching the debugger when you want to communicate with a target.
