License management

I have been given a new laptop and am now faced with the always irritating (at best) task of dealing with flexlm for licensing. As usual it is proving to be an even worse task than my expectations.

The first step is to of course perform a re-host. So logging into the myTI account associated with the license I attempt that. The first step is successful at which point I am asked for the MAC address which I enter as indicated and promptly get the following completely opaque message

There is currently a problem with the Part Number being Activated. Error Number 10045. Click here to contact us.

So now how do I proceed?

Robert

  • Robert,

I apologize for the trouble you are having. In general a separate re-host process is required after a number of re-host procedures.

For help with that, please contact the e-mail shown in the link below:

    Hope this helps,
    Rafael
  • Thanks Rafael,

    Inquiry sent.

It would have made more sense for the error message to actually direct me to a place that could give answers.

  • Robert,

I agree. We have plans to rework the license mechanism that will greatly simplify this for users.

  • The rest of the tale

    • After inquiring as directed I received a request for further information suggesting that the cause was a bad MAC address (I was quite sure it wasn't having checked it several times)
    • Then a query asking for an additional ID (which I did not completely understand but was able to clarify). That information being sent I waited
    • Sent another query the next day and finally got a response with a license file but no instructions so I followed the instructions I had previously which has pointers to a site that by all appearances no longer exists.
    • Followed up again to get up to data instructions
    • Finally able to go through the install and run into several issues along the way
      • The instructions say that the web site will start after install (with the start as service checked). This appears to be incorrect, at least it did not work for me and while trying to determine the problem I eventually managed to manually start it.
      • The single machine (user and licence server on the same machine) are wrong. Thankfully I found it obvious. The instructions suggested to search for the IP address of the PC and use that which will only work for the case that the IP address never changes. Thankfully the obvious solution is correct.

It strikes me that all this protection on TI's part is counter productive. TI appears to sell the only compiler for their DSP. After the experiences I have had with the compiler protection paranoia I am left to wonder why I would ever recommend a TI DSP. At some point there are too may hoops in the development tools to jump through.
