How to debug existing code in CCS without flashing a new code.

I'm currently facing communication issues while using the SCI in TMS230F28335. The SCI is able to send data to the computer however it seems it isn't able to receive any. I wanted to check the receiver buffer of the program while it is running. Additionally I don't have the code that is currently flashed into the DSP (The code which I have is the older version of the one currently flashed into the DSP). Is there any way I can check the receiver buffer/variables while the previously flashed code is running?

I went through https://e2e.ti.com/support/development_tools/code_composer_studio/f/81/t/533860 as well as http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Debug_Handbook_for_CCS but couldn't figure out how to debug the flashed code when you don't actually have the code.

I'm using a Spectrum Digital C2000 XDS510LC debug probe to connect to JTAG and running CCS 6.1.0
