java.lang.NullPointerException when entering CCS Debug perspective

Gents and Ladies,

My CCS 6.1.1 in Win 7 gives me the java Exception error every first time I select the Debug perspective.

This is a recent, fresh installation of CCS. The very same issue happened on 6.0 before - it's been here for over a year...

It does not prevent my from doing anything, but it is kind of annoying - particularly when using the machine to teach colleagues, who stare at you with a "can't you properly install software in your PC?" look...

Then, when closing CCS, again the same error pops up quickly before the program shuts down.

I looked into all similar errors on the forums, but they don't seem to be the same as this case.

Any hints?

    First, your in the wrong forum. So I'll be asking the admin to move this to the CCS forum. Second, I do not and have not seen a problem with debug perspective. I'm on Windows 7 and have used many different CCS versions from 5.5 to 6.0 to 7.0 and those in between and have never experienced this problem.

    If its easily reproducible, I would suggest you list the step by step to reproduce and then take a screen shot of the error if possible and post it here.

    Indeed this is the wrong forum... Something related to the forums navigation or a system error, as I did not even get close to the TI_RTOS forum this morning! Totally intended to post it in CCS! Thanks for having it moved to the proper location when possible.
    Yes, the error is easily reproducible: Step 1) Start CCS; Step 2) Click on Debug. As for a print, I am not sure I'll have one available, as I have just uninstalled everything related to CCS and will restart a fresh attempt.
    Now, as for you to suggest yours as an answer... Really?

    Is using the latest version CCS 6.2 an option for you? If so, could you give that version a try and let us know if you experience the same issue?

    Also, FYI, the next release CCSv7 is scheduled to be released by end of the week.

    If the issue is reproducible with CCS 6.2 and/or CCS 7.0, it would help us if you could generate/collect the debug server logs, Eclipse logs and dump files (as per this page) and zip them up and attach them here.

    Hello Aartig,
    Thanks for the input. It turns out that I already had 6.2 in my machine, but had not noticed that the start menu shortcut was pointing to 6.1.
    The problem "seems" to be present in 6.2 as well - and to justify this weird answer, I explain: while looking for this solution, similar posts suggested things related to MS VisualStudio versions/updated, etc... I decided I'd clean my PC from old MS stuff - which turned my machine useless, and basically nothing would work anymore - to the point that downloading those MS stuff back didn't work anymore! It had been a while since I last reinstalled a Windows, but that's what's happening for the last 2-3 days.
    Anyway, long story long, the fresh Win7SP1 installation is still not smooth...
    For now, just to serve emergency support, I installed CCS6.2 - and it gives me 3 erros on startup: CrashTrackerJob, LicenseAcquisition and LoadingDeviceInformation.
    I'll keep trying to full update the Windows part of it, and looking ahead for 7.0 soon as possible!

    For the errors you refer to ( CrashTrackerJob, LicenseAcquisition and LoadingDeviceInformation) it is usually related to a corrupt or incomplete installation of Microsoft runtime libraries.     The CCSv7 release will be announced tomorrow, but it is available for download today, so feel free to give it a try.

    Meanwhile I kept battling to apply the ~2Gb of Windows updates, and got my Win7 status all green now. After that, CCS 6.2.0 worked perfectly. The NullPointerException that originated this post no longer showed up, so it was also related to Windows components of my old installation.

    Installing CCS7.0 now. One point about the installation (happened with 620 as well): it insists on telling me that it detected an anti-virus running, when there was no such. Maybe the Windows internal security or firewall? It did not prevent a good installation on 6.2.0, but the warning is debatable...

    CCS7: One error during update: "can't read 'update': no such variable". The installation exited as an error. The files and directories are installed, but there is no ccstudio.exe inside DIR/eclipse/  (assuming that the structure is similar to 6.2.0).

    I'll download the full version to give it a try, as the first attempt was online install. And will post on a new thread whatever happens...

    That's great. Glad to hear that CCS 6.2 is working well now.

    Sometimes the anti-virus may still be running some processes like real-time file checking even if the AV program is disabled, and that will trigger the message. It is ok to just click through it if it does not interfere with the install process.
