CCS: Errors in compile code in inherited code. Please need help resolving the issues so i can start supporting the project.

As you can see from the build output, there is something wrong with the compiler invocation, but I'm not sure what the reason for it could be.

The above line should actually look something like this:

'Invoking: C2000 Compiler'
"C:/ti/ccsv6/tools/compiler/c2000_15.12.3.LTS/bin/cl2000" -v28 -ml -mt ...

with the path to compiler (cl2000) being wherever the compiler tools are located in your installation.

As you can see in your build output, the path to compiler is missing, so consequently the build will fail.

Which version of CCS are you using? Do you see a C2000 compiler tools directory (similar to above path) in your CCS installation.

Another test you could do is to import and build an example project from ControlSuite and see if that builds successfully.

This line seems to indicate an error at line 70 of the app.cfg file. Since this error is coming from the RTOS config file I would suggest starting a new post in the
TI-RTOS forums as the experts there should be able to help better with this.

When you import a project created with older versions of tools into a newer version of CCS, usually in the Project Properties it will indicate which version it was originally created with and which version is being used for the build. For example, in the screenshot below, the XDCTools version the project was originally created with is 3.32.0.06_core but 3.32.1.22_core is being used for the build as that is the only version detected. Similarly for TI-RTOS version: 2.18.0.03 vs 2.20.1.08. This is for an ARM project, not C2000, but should give you the general idea of where to look for version numbers.

I need your help and or TI help.

I have inherited a working project in ccs 6.1.2.00015 and based on control suite from TI and it’s in production so the program compiled by the previous engineer and have a hex code two machines running.

I have not started a project from scratch for a while so I am rusty on CCS and the paths and the tolls and which features to enable/disable to compile the code.

I have been posting in TROS forum because the error was in TROS but it was I was using the wrong TROS bios. now the error seems that it can’t find the include files.

so, I am sending you a copy of my correspondence with Steve.

I have zipped files of the project code, the tools they use, and C:\TI directory!

I am not familiar with CCS enough to figure what the errors are or how to fix them. The last batch of errors look like the compiler can't find the include files path.

Enclosed is the properties and all the project files.

I can give you access to my machine, or go to TI offices in bay area or whatever you suggest! Just want to compile the code without errors compare the hex code and modify the code for new features and port it to new machine.

I tried Arrow and Avnet. the message I got is that TI moved its support to E2E support on the web.

in previous life, I just called TI and got support the sent engineers to help me.

When I was director of Engineering at Capella Inc. TI really helped us! The TI DSP kept hanging up when it rebooted and it was random problem that I could not debug, it was problem with the chip needing a pull-up resister on one of the pins because the internal pull-up was not enough.

The company I am consulting for Gener8, is design company that has big companies as clients! Gener8 buys lots of TI parts analog, digital, DSPs, & Power electronics.

I am doing this on my own time. given the whole design environment working. Instead I am stubborn engineer and keep trying :-(

1) The good news is that we have a working compiled code working on two machines

2) The problem is that we can't recreate the environment to compile it.

3) This is TI code composer setup problem not code problem.

4) I suspect previous engineers had the same problems with TI CCS software as we are having now!  

5) I suspect that TI helped the engineers who wrote to iron out the code.

 I think getting TI to help us fix the problem with our setup of CCS is the fastest way to resolve.

I will contact TI engineer and ask him for help first.

I am using code CCS project 6.1.2.00015.

in this complex project, they may be using make files?

it is complex project based on Motor control board from TI, Control-suite with different version maybe they updated to this version I am using I don't know.

I am sure the engineers who did this had lots of problems and maybe TI engineer helped them because I have all their tools -zipped and it does not compile either.!!

I am sticking with fixing it because I am an engineer. I hate not to finish something I started. I asked arrow for help and they said TI shifted all their help to E2E

can you help me!  it could be simple missing path file or Missing  a TI tool that they call and I don't have.

if not can you check with a guru in ti about the control suit or guru on CCS?

What is the exact error that is remaining? Have you been able to fix the BIOS related error? I see in your related post in the TI-RTOS forum that Steve provided a 
suggestion to fix the BIOS error.

If you have been able to get past that error but are getting a different error, then please rebuild the project, save off the full output in the CCS build console
(as per this wiki page) and attach it here. One odd thing I noticed in your project is that the device is set for F28075, however the linker command files used are 
for F2837xD devices. Is that the intention? Is that how it was set and built in the original project you inherited?

Also one request: when attaching files with large amount of text, rather than copy/pasting it directly into the Reply box, please click on "Use rich formatting" at the

when I do rich format and insert a file I just get a weird picture in the text! is that how the file get attached  I will attach files .pkg files to this to this.

I have not changed the code files I just trying to recreate the ti tool chain.

I took a look at your project and let me first provide some background and details so you can have a better understanding of what is going on here.

In the Project Explorer view in CCS it will typically tell you the active "build configuration". In one of your earlier screenshots the active build configuration was shown as "Release". More information on build configurations is here:

Your project has 3 build configurations - Debug_Flash, Debug_RAM and Release.

You can switch between and view the settings/properties/tool versions of each of these configurations by right-clicking on the project and going to Build Configurations->Set Active and selecting one of them.

Now I took a look at the .cproject file in the project folder. This shows the following:

1) The Debug_RAM and Debug_Flash configurations are set for F28376D device and use TI-RTOS 2.16.0.08/XDCtools 3.32.0.06_core.

I inferred this for Debug_RAM for example, by looking at lines 110-124 of the .cproject file.

2) The Release configuration is set for F28075 device and uses TI-RTOS 2.12.1.33/XDCtools 3.31.00.24

With these details in hand, I imported the project into CCS 6.1.2 and tried to build each of the build configurations. The issues I hit were the following:

1) When building Release configuration with TI-RTOS 2.12.1.33/XDCtools 3.31.00.24, it fails due to missing compiler include paths. Looking at the .cproject file it appears that the proper include paths are simply not set for this configuration (compare lines 138 onwards that sets include paths for Debug_RAM configuration with line 46 onwards for Release configuration, and notice that the Release config does not have all the required include paths). So this build configuration could never have built successfully as configured.

2) When building the Debug_RAM or Debug_Flash configuration, it fails because the device support for F28376D is not included in that version of CCS. There is likely a device support package that can be installed to add support for F28376D in CCS 6.1.2, but rather than do that I decided to simply try the latest version of CCS.

So here are the steps I took to get a close-to successful build:

1) Installed latest version of CCS 7.0.0 (this will have all the latest C2000 device support).

Note, you can keep your existing CCS 6.1.2 version for now (no need to uninstall it) and simply install CCSv7 to a different directory. That way you can use both versions side-by-side

2) Installed TI-RTOS 2.16.00.08 and XDCtools 3.32.0.06_core and had CCS discover these tools

You can download TI-RTOS (which also installs XDCtools) from http://software-dl.ti.com/dsps/dsps_public_sw/sdo_sb/targetcontent/tirtos/index.html

3) Installed Compiler v6.4.10.

You can install this by going to CCS menu 'Help -> Install New Software'. In the "Work with:" drop-down, select "Code Generation Tools Updates", uncheck the box "Show only the latest versions of available software", then select version 6.4.10 of C2800 Compiler tools.

4) Imported the project and set it for Debug_RAM configuration

5) Built the project

With these steps I get an almost successful build. The pre-build step fails for me and that step creates a version.h file that is included in other source files so that part of the build fails. If that is not an issue at your end the build should be successful. I have attached my CCS build log for your reference.

The Debug_Flash configuration generates the same error related to version.h. And as I mentioned before, the Release configuration, as it currently is, is not set up to build successfully.

I'm just surprised that you were handed over a project with no supporting documentation or details about which tools were used to build it and how it was configured. 

Anyway I hope this information helps you move forward. Please note that if your intended goal is to produce a bit exact binary as what was previously generated by this project, then you need to ensure that all tool versions are exactly the same as what was used to build it previously. It is possible that the project was created with a specific version of tools, but a slightly different compatible version was used for the actual build. On the other hand, if you're looking to get a successful build so you can move ahead with making modifications and updates to the code then hopefully this will help.

so I concluded that the Release configuration has to be the compiled code and the Debug_RAM and Debug_Flash configurations are for the simulation setup they used!

Even though the device variant for the Release configuration is set to F28075, the source files (that are common across all build configurations) reference F2837xD related header files. For instance, several source files in the project reference F2837xD_device.h (some of them are main.c, usb_hal.c, stepper.h). This just happens to be how the project is set up. I can't comment on whether this will run on a F28075 device or not, I'm just explaining that the source files of the project do use F2837xD header files.

No. These paths have to be specified under the project's Compiler Include paths and they are simply not there for the Release configuration.

I fixed the errors for the Release configuration by doing the following:

1) Reviewed the include paths specified for Debug_RAM configuration and added them to Release configuration (they are under Project Properties->Build->Compiler->Include Options, under --include_path). After adding them this is what it looks like:

2) I also had to add some compiler preprocessor defines (the ones in Red below) that were in the Debug_RAM config but were missing from Release, to avoid some other errors.

After these changes, the only error that remains at build time is the one related to version.h that I previously mentioned and that exists with the Debug_* configs as well. 

I still believe that the Release config for this project was not designed to build as-is and was simply used as a starting point. So my advice here would be to check with someone that has knowledge about the project and device it is intended to run on, to save yourself the time and effort of going down the wrong path.

I would also appreciate it if you could please post a reply to your other thread in the TI-RTOS forum so they are aware that you have been able to move past the RTOS error. Thanks!
