CCS: MSP430 IDE environment

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

I am currently a Microchip user and have been since 1986 but, due to a poor technical support structure, want to change to TI using MSP430 and more specifically the device with a Bluetooth interface.Being a newbie I \would like to ask what I need to download, as far as a IDE is concerned, that compares with the MPLAB and the compilers XC8, XC16 and XC32?

  • Welcome Graham,
You have several options for IDEs for the MSP430. Code Composer Studio and IAR are two of the more popular ones. As this is the Code Composer Studio forum, I can talk more about the former. CCS is a full IDE like MPLAB, which is also supported in Windows, Linux, and MacOS. CCS also built off a well known open source IDE framework - Eclipse. Because of this, it makes CCS very extensible and there is a large selection of 3rd party plugins from the Eclipse marketplace. CCS also comes with TI's own MSP430 compilers, but there is also a GCC toolchain for MSP430 available. Though CCS, you can access example software and documentation from right within CCS through the CCS Resource Explorer.

If you are interested in CCS, I suggest taking a look at this introductory video to get an idea of the look and feel:
    training.ti.com/getting-started-code-composer-studio-v7

You can download it from the CCS main wiki page:
    processors.wiki.ti.com/.../Category:Code_Composer_Studio_v7

If are interested in other IDE options for MSP430, I suggest starting a discussion in the MSP device forum. The experts there will be familiar with all the IDE options for MSP430.

    Thanks
    ki
