CCS/TMDSEMU110-U: Missing documentation for the XDS110 Debug Probe (TMDSEMU110-U)

Part Number: TMDSEMU110-U
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ENERGYTRACE, CC3200

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

The documentation for the XDS110 programmer is very sparse. So far I have only been able to find a "User's Guide" (Literature Number: SPRUI94), and this guide only provides very brief descriptions of how the use the functionalities of the programmer.

E.g. if you want to use the UART of the AUX connection I first got it to work when I connected VDD to "TGTVDD (Sense)", but according to the userguide it seems that this input should be used for a more precise voltage measurement for the target power supply. So I don't know if it is correct to connect VDD to TGTVDD?

Further in the userguide it says that "The XDS110 probe can also be used to supply power to targets with 1.8-V to 3.6-V IO and with current draw limited to ~400 mA". So far I have not been able to get the "TGTSUPPLYOUT" to provide any voltage. I have read somewhere that you need to start debugging to switch on the powersupply and you need to set the voltage level in the target configuration - I have tried both, but is doesn't work. Do you have to make further adjustments or configurations to get the supply to work?

How is the "TGTSUPPLYIN" going to be used?

In the userguide it also says "The ability to supply target power from the probe is a new feature of the XDS110, and requires additional HW and SW setup." What kind of hardware is that?

Is it possible to get a schematic of the programmer in order to understand the functions better?

/Henrik

  • I can see from another thread, that it is correct, that the "TGTVDD (Sense)" must be powered by target VDD supply:

  • Henrik,

Any feedback on how we can improve the documentation would be appreciated. I believe an update for the VDD detail is in the works. Would having any videos showing specific configurations be useful?

  • Hi John

    Thanks for your reply:-)

It would be great, if you would make a video explaining the supply possibilities of the XDS110 together with the Energy Trace options and particular how to use the energy trace in different setups. When I read the forums, I can see that many people (including myself) are starting with a launchpad (e.g. CC3200-LP og MSP432) and are testing the functions of the XDS110 before moving to their own board. So a suggestion for a video would also be about the transition from a launchpad to your own prototype board.

  • Henrik,

I will put those on the list. There are some important details that it makes sense for us to cover more explicitly. For example the EnergyTrace support on the XDS110 is good for MSP432 but for CC3200 you really should use an add-on pod what we will be releasing shortly. Knowing when to use each solution will be something we need to cover.
