CCS/MSP-FET: MSP-FET

Part Number: MSP-FET

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

Using both CCS ver7 MSP flasher in a project.  The MSP Flasher tells me the MSP FET firmware is out of date.  If I download, things do not work.  Also, after downloading in flasher, CCS tells me firmware is out of date.  If I update there, things work again and so does flasher (just say no to update).

What's going on and why the difference???  Do I have a problem I need to worry about??  Things seem to work if I say no to updates in Flasher..

  • Hi Bob,

To clarify, do things work in CCS before trying to download the update in MSP Flasher? Either way, I do not think you need to worry about anything as long as updating in CCS has fixed things. Updating it through either CCS or MSP Flasher (or through any other means) should be sufficient, so as long as the update worked and things are functioning correctly now you should not need to worry about anything.

  • Dear Nathan -  Yes, things worked just fine with Code Composer before running and updating with Flasher.  Updating with MSP Flasher (I was supprised that Flasherr said I needed an update because my Code Composer was just downloaded a couple of months ago).  Things did not work after downloading through Flasher.

I returned to CCS where it said the USB-FET firmware was out of date (just downloaded with Flasher).  I updated the firmware through CCS and things started working again.

More than anything, why would Flasher update with firmware that is out of date with CCS.  It seems to me someone does not know all that is happening.

    Regards Bob

  • Hi Bob,

MSP Flasher will prompt the user for an update when it detects a conflict between the firmware version of the debug probe (FET)
and the version of the MSP Debug Stack (MSP430.dll). It looks like your issue may be because it is trying to download an older version of the FET firmware to match an outdated MSP debug stack. CCS will have the most recent Debug Stack, so it will try to update the FET firmware back to match this newer MSP Debug Stack.

To solve this, I suggest you download the latest MSP Debug Stack, or at least the version that is being used by your CCS. You can find the downloads and details here: http://www.ti.com/tool/MSPDS
