Problems after update from 4.1 to 4.2

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CCSTUDIO

After using the internal Software update function to version 4.2.0.10017 the following error message appears after starting the CCS:

In the Preferences->CCS->Code Generation Tools are no more compiler tools detected.

How can I get back a working environment?

  • This message indicates something went wrong in the reading or creation of the cache file that stores all the target information. On Windows XP, this file is stored at: C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Local Settings\Application Data\.TI.  Please try exiting CCS, deleting this folder, and restarting CCS.

Please also let us know what OS you are using and the path to where you have CCS installed.

  • Dear Andy,

deleting this folder doesn't change much. The only thing which has changed is that I have to reenter the license key.

By the way I am using XP SP3, CCS is installed in C:\program files\Texas Instruments\.

    Guido

  • Could you attach the file located at <workspace folder>\.metadata\.log ?

  • This is the .log file.

The log states that there is something missing with MSP430 but I am using a C6455.

  • Hi Guido,

Could you browse to your <ccs_install>/ccsv4/eclipse/plugins/ directory, and show me all the JAR files that begin with "com.ti.ccstudio.buildDefinitions.MSP430"?  It should look something like this:

And then, in your CCS workbench, could you go to Help > About... > Plug-in Details, and again, show me the plugin versions for all the plugins that begin with "com.ti.ccstudio.buildDefinitions.MSP430"?  It should look something like this:

Even if you're not working with MSP430, this would hopefully help in understanding why you're seeing the errors.

    Thanks,

    - Baltasar

  • Hi Baltasar,

It seems that some files are missing...

  • Yes, it doesn't look like you have any of the 4.2.0 plugins...so somehow your upgrade to 4.2.0 hasn't completed...

Could you try upgrading your CCS to 4.2.0 again?  Or try installing a full CCSv4.2.0 install?

    - Baltasar

  • Hi,

I also encountered a problem after installing the 4.2 update. My CCS4 is unable to launch a debug session. When starting the debug session it resets the device (F28035), starts to load and then shows this message.

When I click yes I can still start the device but I don't have access to registers and can't set breakpoints. It worked perfectly fine before except the profile and clock function, which was the reason why I did the update.

  • I have deinstalled the CCS and reinstalled the full package.

    Now everythings works fine again.

  • Did you install 4.2 or 4.1.3?

I tried to uninstall the update package, but changed nothing

  • I have removed the complete CCS v4.

Then I have installed the full 4.2 DVD image.

Before I used only the internal update function to patch from 4.1.3 to 4.2 which resulted in some missing files.

  • Hi Guido,

Could you provide me with a little more context - I have some specific questions.

Do you remember in your original CCS 4.1.3 install which of the choices below did you select?

Do you have an environment where CCS was installed by one user ID, and used by a user with another user ID?

    Thank you in advance.

    Martin

  • Hi Martin,

I am not sure which version I had installed.
Maybe the Platinum Edition or a Custom Version with support removed for some devices like C28x.

No I have installed a Custom configuration only with C6000 DSPs enabled. (This is the only hardware type I am using.)

    Guido

  • Guido,

In addition to Martin's request, would you be able to provide the installation log files located at

       C:\Program Files\InstallJammer Registry\ccsv4\DF98E52A-EF99-44CD-87FE-983EC4F3E105\TI_CCSv4_install.log.*.

There may be more than one file (with a date appended). We would really like to resolve the root cause of the problem you experienced.

    Moe,

The issue you are seeing seems to be quite different than Guido's. To help resolve your issue, could you provide the debug server logs as described here?

  • Andy,

You will find the logged data from debug session start in the attached file.

    5344.moe_ccs4_debug_error_110210.zip

I recently tried to uninstall the update package - did not work, but now I can't uninstall the hole CCS either.I wanted to uninstall and reinstall the hole program but now I'm stuck. Guess I have to delete all files from hard disk...

I thought I could use the new package to "repair" the old installation but this just added some features which I hadn't installed the first time.

However, I hope you can help me out here.

  • Hi Andy,

here is a zipped log of the installation history.
The first file contains the long story from 4.1.0 to 4.1.3
The second is the update to 4.2.

There are other log files in the installation log files directory but they have been created while installing version 4.2.

    TI_CCSv4_install.zip
  • Moe,

    Thank you!

The log suggests there might be something wrong with one of the files in <install_dir>\ccsv4\DebugServer\propertyDB. Would you be able to zip up this folder and attach it?

As long as you have disk space, there is no problem to install multiple copies of CCS. If you don't mind keeping two copies for a little while, could you install the other version in a separate folder?

I will need to look at the failed uninstall separately. It isn't really a problem to delete the files if you just want to clean up. There will be some data left in the Install Jammer registry folder (under program files), and the menu/desktop shortcuts will not be removed if you do this. The data in the IJ registry will prevent you from installing to the same folder name at a later date.

  • Guido,

Thank you for posting the logs!

Looking through the logs, my theory is the trouble started back on August 13. The series of actions I see in the log is that you started with 4.1.1 in April. In May, you updated to 4.1.2. In August, you likely tried to apply the full 4.1.3 install to your current 4.1.2 folder. The full installer doesn't let you do that, so you exited. A few minutes later, you re-ran the installer, but this time the check for the previous version did not block the install. The install completed, and everything was working.  This week, you updated your 4.1.3 install to 4.2, and then ran into the problem above.

The item in bold is the critical piece. As your 4.1.3 install was done with different options than the original install in that folder, things became confused when the 4.2 update was applied.  I have not been able to determine a condition that would let the 4.1.3 full install be applied on top of 4.1.2. It was well over a month ago, but if you happen to recall anything about the sequence of actions that occurred, could you pass them along?

  • Andy,

I'm keeping the corrupted installation and install the second one in a seperate folder, no problem.

Here is the zipped folder attached.

    4466.moe_propertyDB_110210.zip

Hope you can figure out the issue. Let me know if you need something else.

  • Hi Andy,

I have tried to install another version of ccs on my computer 2 times (..\program files\texas instruments\ccs4\ccs42\ , ..\program files\texas instruments2\ccs4) now, and its not working. Unfortunately I just had a blue screen while connecting to the target and clicking "No" at the pop-up error message.

Is it possible that the old installation is blocking everything?

  • Moe,

There is nothing wrong with the files in the folder you posted, so I'm going to need to look elsewhere. Since you are saying the full install into a different folder also doesn't work, there must be something else in your environment that is causing this problem. I have one more possibility to check out, but if that does not show any problem would it be possible for us to arrange a Webex (i.e. remote debug) session with you? If so, could you provide your email address either by using the Wiki feature to start a private conversation with me, or by adding your email address to your profile?

There should be no problem with having multiple versions of CCS on the same PC.

  • Andy,

Webex would be fine with me, only problem is that the software is running on my own laptop and it has no internet connection within TI. I'm going to install an older version of ccs as soon as the download is finished to see if this changes anything. If this won't change anything as well, I gonna start uninstalling all the drivers I can uninstall manually and then delete ccs, as I need a working version very urgent.

I just added my email. i wanted to do start the wiki conversation but I don't know how...
