CCS/TMS320VC5416: CCSv5.2 - Errors connecting to my board

Part Number: TMS320VC5416

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

Hello,

I have been trying to connect to my old custom board equipped with a TMS320VC5416 using - Code Composer Studio v5.2, Blackhawk 560-USB-v2 System trace emulator and CCXML file and selecting the TMS320C5416 since there is no TMS320VC5416 in the selection menu.while performing a "Test connection" I get the picture that my signal integrity is just fine since all the Tests run successfully, and there is no problem on either the Debugger's side or the Target's side. When i try to "Launch selected configuration" using my CCXML File it manages to connect and suspends the Processor but I am not able to read any of the registers or view disassembly of the target even after Connected-Suspended. sometimes when i connect the registers would show they're all 0x0000 which doesn't make sense.. and if that doesn't happen then it's written "Unable to read data" in red font. same goes for the disassembly.. I either get a spam of the same command or it just says it was unable to read the data memory from this address (It applies basically to all addresses). I have read about the Security ROM/RAM modes that this Device can implement but I never knew or never tried to Lock and activate these modes.. Could i have accidentally made it secure without even knowing and now I can't connect at all to my device? I'd like to get some help from you guys if anyone has ever bumped across a situation such as this.

Hopefully even Ki-So-Lee comes to rescue me from this situation as well ;D

Thank you very much in advance! =]

  • Hi,

I don't have a 5416 device with me, but my VC5402 DSK had a successful connection to my CCSv5.5.0 on Windows 7 Pro 64-bits and using the same emulator.

This rules out any intrinsic compatibility problems with the devices you are using (the 5416 is quite similar to the 5402 in terms of JTAG architecture), therefore I would suggest the following options:

Double-check all processor voltages and clocks carefully - your description matches the scenario where the core is running free or has insufficient power but the Debug Probe can't detect it (these older devices had a very limited visibility about the status of the core).

Update your copy of CCS to release 5.5.0 to see if this is not a problem with the older 5.2.0.

Apart from this, I can't necessarily think about other possible problems at the moment, but I will return to this thread if I have additional ideas.

    Hope this helps,

    Rafael

  • Hey Rafael,

First of all thanks a lot for the quick reply.
I'll do my tests with Code Composer v5.5 before I jump to any further conclusions.
What I'm afraid of is the device's security mode described in the datasheet where it claims that RAM/ROM Security mode is enabled and JTAG Emulation is COMPLETELY Disabled. I wonder if i accidentally caused a write that locked the device when i used it last time. I'll double check the voltages although I'm almost sure about that not being the problem.
I'll look further into it but I still can't find in any of the Device's datasheets any information or indication that I can confirm that the device might be on those security modes, which worries me quite a bit.
I'll post here a reply with my findings.
    Thanks!
If anyone else has anything to say i'd love to hear =]
  • So i tried connecting to the target using CCSv5.5 but failed in the same kind of way. Voltages seem to also be pretty stable and "Test Connection" Works perfectly so that eliminates false signal integrity...
If you've got any more ideas or things i could check it'd be cool if you'd let me know =]!
Thanks again for the help, Hopefully i can get to some sort of solution sometimes soon.
  • Hi,

I have asked for help from some of the C54x experts. Unfortunately from my side I do not have many additional suggestions.

    Regards,
    Rafael
  • Hi Akibdo
Were you able to work through this? Unfortunately this is a very old device and we have limited help/expertise to offer beyond the guidance Rafael has already provided.
I am marking this thread as "TI Thinks Resolved" as there has not been any activity on this for 3 weeks - if the issue is not resolved, please feel free to keep reopen it.

  • Hi Akibdo,

I just wonder if you changed your boot selection or wipe the boot image from memory, does it make any difference in your connection issue. Do you have any boards that are working to compare against?

    Regards,
