CCS 4 errors in Windows Event Viewer

Anonymous

Hi All,

I would like to report some Windows Event Viewer's warnings/errors relates to CCS.

The first two are from sdoint.sys:

The next is from bh560eth which seems to be a part of the blackhawk emulator:

I am using a HP tx2500 laptop with ATI Raedon 3200 video card, and the operating system is Windows 7 64-bit Professional. It intermittently automatically reboots and the windows dump file (C:\Windows\Minidump\*.dmp) indicates that the reboot are due to video card driver atikmdag.sys and atikmdpag.sys. But before installing CCS 4, such automatically reboot never happened. Althought the windows dump file (can be viewed using BlueScreenView http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html) didn't show any CCS component on the error stack, Windows Event Viewer does show several CCS component errors as in the screenshots above.

I have the following questions:

  1. Is there any association between CCS 4/blackhawk and system's automatic reboot?
  2. Is CCS 4/blackhawk compatible with Windows 7 64-bit?
  3. Does CCS 4/blackhawk has any incompatibility with ATI video card and/or its driver?

Sincerely,
Zheng

  • Zheng,

The two device drivers you described are provided by the third party vendors Spectrum Digital and BlackHawk, therefore you may want to ask their support line if they know anything about the messages you have been getting.

    About your questions:

    1. Hardly. In practice the only moment where I see a potential danger is when CCS is working with the emulator low-level device drivers while debugging code on the target. If the BSOD happens during a debug session, chances are high that this is the problem (may not be the only cause, though). However, if it happens while the PC is doing something else then it can be anything - even if you have the CCS window open all the time but minimized.

    2. Yes. I use Blackhawk and Spectrum Digital emulators all the time in my Win7/64 and do not have any issues with that. However, I use the most up-to-date drivers available (check the CCSv4 Help --> Software Updates --> Find and Install). By the way, in my system I don't have any events related to the <sdiont.sys> and <bh560eth.sys>, therefore it makes a bit harder to know precisely what may be going on.

    3. Not that I know of. However, the video device drivers are accessed at every instance during the execution of the operating system and any other issues may affect its operation and fool Windows to think the video is the culprit. Did you recently update the video drivers or the operating system in your PC? Also, are you using the Aero interface?

The reason I am asking this because I had this issue with my notebook a while ago - everytime I updated the video driver in XP I started to have lockups (not BSODs). I then installed Win7/64, updated the drivers and enabled the full blown Aero interface with all the graphics capabilities - then I started to have BSODs. All this was causing overheat of the graphics processor and a faulty Nvidia Quadro NV135 forced me to replace my motherboard.

As a test I would then suggest removing the Aero effects and see if the system becomes stable. If not, then I would try to revert to a previous version of the video driver (if you updated them). As a last resource, I would "quarantine" this PC by uninstalling CCSv4 temporarily and see if the problem disappears.

Unfortunately this is just a guess as intermittent issues like these are very difficult to reproduce.

    Hope this helps,

    Rafael

    Dear Rafael,

Many thanks for the detailed answer. I am experimenting with point 2 (CCS update) and has chosen to use Windows 7 Basic theme (Desktop->(right click)Personalize) which is not listed in the Aero class. Not sure if these two combined will end the BSOD problem, but an immediate drawback is that with the disabling of Aero theme, taskbar thumbnail preview also has stopped functioning.

I agree with your point 1. Since BSOD didn't happen when debugging, it now seems unlikely to have been caused by CCS.

  • Hello Zheng,

I am writing to comment on the even viewer for bh560eth.sys (Blackhawk).

First, the event view is correct.  You are trying to load a 32-bit driver on a 64-bit machine - and that won't work.  The incompatible message is accurate.

Second, I don't know how you could have installed the 32-bit version of the file.  Windows 7 (or XP/Vista) x64 should not allow that to happen.

Can you let me know if you manually tried to install device driver files?

    Thanks,Andrew

    Dear Andrew,

I guess that perhaps you have met problems in using XDS emulator on a 64 bit machine.

I am using a emulator and EVM board from a third-party provider. Althought I was able to use the emulator on a 32-bit XP machine, I was actually not able to install the driver for XDS560 emulator on the 64-bit Windows 7 system. Before my upgrade to Win 7 I also tried to install XDS560 emulator driver on Vista 64-bit and it also failed.

I asked the provider of the emulator and they say they currently have no support for 64-bit Windows systems.

This might be somewhat different from the Blackhawk driver that you are asking. Windows 7/Vista 64 bit version did allow me to install the full package of CCS 4.12 without prompting any error message. Because of the lack of XDS560 driver support, I am only using CCS 4 on 64-bit Win 7  machines for simulation and connects the emulator and EVM to a 32-bit XP computer to run in the real chip.

I have disabled UAC (user account control) in Win 7 before installation. I don't think leaving UAC on will cause any problem to CCS4 but I just haven't tested this.

    Sincerely,

    Zheng

  • Zheng,

Thank you for the details.  We have not seen problems with CCS v4 with UAC enabled or disabled - we test in both modes.

I will close this as far as Blackhawk emulation is concerned, but I am still curious how and why 32-bit drivers (bh560eth.sys) are being loaded on a 64-bit machine.

    Regards,

    Andrew
