CCS: TIDA-01513

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDA-01513, SN6501-Q1

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

Hello,

I'm considering applying TIDA-01513 to our automotive application.

There is a mechanical relay in your leakage current measurement.

I wonder that the mechanical relay can endure so many switching times

because the frequency of measuring leakage current will be more than once a second.

Do you have any recommendation for substituting the mechanical relay?

Thanks in advance.

  • Hello Kim,

Good to know that you are considering TIDA-01513 for automotive application. Do visit TI.com for building support functions of Automotive BMS.

If no of Relay operations are more than recommended by manufacturer it will definitely pose a threat for safety in BMS. There are multiple ways of replacing mechanical small signal relay with semiconductors. Here is one example for the same.

SN6501-Q1,SN650X-Q1 can be used  for driving power relay, Relay can be selected based on isolation requirements for the switch. Rpd will help in discharging the gate- source capacitance during turn off of the system.

    Thanks

  • Hello Mr. Rama,
Thank you for your kind advise.
But, my question is just how to replace the mechanical relay
because the mechanical relay is not good for the frequent testing.
SSR seems not to be good because the voltage will be very high for the turn_off case.

    Thanks
    Regards,
    Kim
  • Hello Kim,

    Replacing Mechanical Relay:
    1) In case of SSR, Turn off withstanding voltage is definitely an important design challenge. Care must be taken in choosing the right switches (high Vds during turn off), series resistors(>700Kohms) for the given "turn off state withstanding voltage" requirement.

    2) Considering safe leakage current from OEM/market, maximum battery voltage an high ohmic resistors(>2Mohm) can be chosen to connect high voltage battery connections and chassis ground.Note: Testing mechanism of TIDA-01513 cannot support this circuit. Check with compliance and safety team before implementing the same.

If the physical separation of isolation contact is mandatory, then it is recommended to check for high reliability small signal relays. There are couple of manufacturers of small signal relays who support high number of relay operations(ideally targeting this application). Do contact your local support/supplier team of small signal relays, they might have better options/recommendations to support this challenge with small signal relay.

    Thanks
    Regards

  • Hello Rama,

Thank you for your kind advise.
I'll check SSR and relay which can match with our spec.
